Having properly established the pervasions of the four great elements, space is all-pervasive and possesses knowing consciousness, therefore it is established upon these. It is not so for the other sources of birth, because the five faculties cannot extend outwards, sound has no continuity, and smell cannot extend into the realm of form. If one thinks that since pervasions are established on the first two of the formless realms, why are they not established on the latter two? To this, some wise ones say that because the latter two gather the mind inwards and are not clear, they are not established. This is unreasonable, because it is only said that the mind of the peak of existence is not clear, and for the first three formless realms, there is no distinction made regarding whether the mind is clear or unclear. What is it then? Because establishing pervasions requires that the main part of the object of focus of one's own realm has the aspect of being limitless, and the first two have this, while the latter two do not. Fourth, pervasion, vastness, pervasiveness, and all-encompassing are different names for the same thing. Therefore, the object of focus, such as earth, makes all realms vast in an exhaustive manner, and in a pervasive manner, it is called pervasion. As it is said in the Ornament for Clear Realization: Because it pervades and expands without interruption, it is called the source of birth of pervasion. As it is said in the Mother of the Bodhisattvas Sutra: Without interruption, it makes the pervasion of earth and so on vast and pervasive, therefore it is called the sources of birth of pervasion and so on. Thus it is said. Fifth, there are four: the physical basis, the mental basis, the object basis, and the way of applying the mind to the actual practice. First, the previous eight have the basis of the desire realm, because they are greatly enhanced through the power of hearing and thinking. The last two, according to the Compendium of Topics, have the basis of the desire and form realms, and according to the Treasury of Knowledge, they have the basis of all three realms, as it is said: The formless is called the basis of the three realms, the rest are born from humans. Second, the Compendium of Topics says that everything relies on the actual basis of meditative concentration, while the Treasury of Knowledge says that the last two are the pure places of the actual basis of the formless realm. Third, there are two types of object bases: those that have been previously trained and those that have not been previously trained. The first type includes rivers, flames burning in forests, light moved by the wind, and flowers such as blue, yellow, and red.

Or white, silver, lunar mandalas, and so on, as well as walls illuminated by the light of the sun and moon, the inside of windows, holes, and so on. Merely seeing these, one can gradually generate the samadhi of cessation from water to the sky. Secondly, the object of cessation for the earth element is not explained in the Abhisamayalankara, but the others in order are: a spotless bowl or other container filled with clean water, a square stove with firewood underneath, fire in the middle, and thick smoke billowing above, as well as wind coming from windows and other places where the wind touches in any direction, and circles made of blue, yellow, red, and white, separated by other colors, as well as holes about a span and four fingers high opening up the sky, and the light of a lamp inside a vase shining on the wall from the surface of the hole, and so on. Fourthly, a person who has attained the actual practice of meditation should focus single-mindedly on these objects, and at the time of practice, they should first generate the intention and attention that this object should pervade all knowable things. During the actual practice, they should also focus only on the names "earth, earth, water, water," and practice single-mindedly. Sixthly, there are two aspects: the apprehended sign and the appearing sign. Firstly, earth is not explained, but the others in order are: water bubbles, and the appearance of water waves mixed with water bubbles, flames spreading and moving as if falling, the appearance of steam rising immediately when boiled milk is dropped on the ground, the four colors blue and so on are like flower stamens and without trunks, and the last two become like holes in the wall, and even if they increase, they do not increase, and they appear to have a roof like a mandala made of earth. The meaning of the apprehended sign is a sign of non-attainment. Secondly, earth is also not explained, but the three, water and so on, appear as unwavering like a jewel fan moving in the sky, and like a red, round moon in the sky, they are close and unwavering as if dwelling and sitting, and the object of the four colors blue and so on rises in the sky and remains like a jewel fan, and the last
