The answer in short: Venerable Shariputra, if one clings to characteristics, then actions and consciousness arise with an object; without an object, it is not so. As it says in the Twenty Thousand Verses: 'Since all consciousnesses are empty, their objects themselves do not exist.' The answer to this is: It is what was said, 'Venerable Shariputra, if one clings to characteristics.' Thus it is said. Its meaning is that the Blessed One said that all actions and consciousnesses are empty, and that the Self-Arisen Discrimination says that all actions and consciousnesses arise are not contradictory, because the former refers to the ultimate truth, and the latter refers to the conventional truth. The fourth objection is that, based on the Self-Arisen Discrimination's acceptance that actions and consciousnesses arise, it is asked: Then, if a Bodhisattva practices the six perfections, such as generosity, in a dream, and dedicates the merit to unsurpassed Bodhi, will it become a dedication to Bodhi or not? If it becomes a dedication to Bodhi, it contradicts the acceptance that actions and consciousnesses are fabricated things. If it does not become a dedication to Bodhi, it contradicts the acceptance that consciousness arises from having an object. That is to say, the sutra says: 'Venerable Subhuti, if a great Bodhisattva gives generosity in a dream, practices from generosity to wisdom, and dedicates that root of virtue entirely to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, will it become entirely dedicated to Bodhi?' And the Twenty Thousand Verses says: 'If one accepts a completely fabricated object, then when the root of virtue of generosity, etc., in a dream is dedicated to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, is it dedicated or not dedicated?' Asking in this way is the debate. Thus it is said. The answer is, the sutra says: Subhuti said: 'Venerable Shariputra, if the great Bodhisattva Maitreya has manifested the prediction of non-retrogression for the root of virtue of being bound by one lifetime, ask him, and he will answer.' Then Shariputra said to the great Bodhisattva Maitreya: 'Venerable Maitreya, the venerable Subhuti says this, the great Bodhisattva Maitreya will answer this question, ask him.' At this time, how does the venerable Maitreya answer?

Then, the great Bodhisattva Maitreya said to the venerable Shariputra: Shariputra, does the Bodhisattva Maitreya answer by name? Or does he answer by the aggregates of form to consciousness? Or does he answer by color? Or does he answer by shape? Or does he answer by the emptiness of the aggregates of form to consciousness? From this point on, there is no power to answer these. As for me, I do not truly see what answers, what answers with, and the dharma to which one answers. And so on. Then Shariputra said to the venerable Maitreya: Venerable Maitreya, have you directly realized those dharmas as they are spoken? Maitreya said: Venerable Shariputra, I have not directly realized those dharmas as they are spoken. Venerable Shariputra, I do not know, perceive, or truly see those dharmas that are expressed by words and thought by mind. And so on. In the Abhisamayalankara it says: The answer to this is that the noble Maitreya has directly realized the direct realization of the three omniscient ones, therefore, this one who is bound by one birth has the power to answer this question. Thus it is said. What is the meaning? If it is in terms of that question, the future Buddhas will appear continuously, therefore, it shows that this question has not been completely answered. If it were completely answered, then the continuous appearance of future Buddhas would become meaningless. That is how it is. How is it shown to be not completely answered? Starting from the name, because there is no object to answer all dharmas. Even so, these are said to have not been directly realized by oneself. The vow not to directly realize is for the purpose of avoiding the fault of completely answering that question for the meaning that has not been directly realized, because it is desired that the dharma of the future Buddhas will not be cut off. Thus it is said. The meaning of these is that Subhuti did not directly state the answer, but turned the conversation to Maitreya, so that Maitreya would answer.
