In order to represent the Mahayana (theg chen) as superior to the Hinayana (theg dman), it must have its own distinctive features. If one asks, what are the characteristics of what is to be represented from the perspective of practice? It is the sixteen self-natures (ngo bo nyid mtshan bcu drug). Taking these sixteen self-natures as the basis, one generally represents the practice of the Mahayana, and specifically represents the practice of the three wisdoms (mkhyen gsum). If we divide it in detail, there are three aspects: what is to be represented? By what is it represented? On what basis is it represented? Among these, what is to be represented is that each of the twenty practices mentioned above has its own nature of Mahayana practice. If we divide it specifically, there are three practices for each of the three wisdoms, because their own nature is the practice of the complete stage. Moreover, each practice completely meditates on all one hundred and seventy-three aspects. Therefore, it should be understood that the general Mahayana practice and the specific three wisdom practices are what are to be represented. As for what represents, there are two types: that which represents the nature of the practice itself, and that which represents its superiority over the practice of the Hinayana. The first is the wisdom-aspect (shes mtshan) and the action-aspect (byed mtshan), which means the yoga of a Bodhisattva who combines skillful means and wisdom. This merely represents the general Mahayana practice. If we divide it specifically, then the wisdom-aspect and the action-aspect of the base-wisdom practice represent the base-wisdom practice of the Mahayana; the wisdom-aspect and the action-aspect of the path-wisdom practice represent the path-wisdom practice; the wisdom-aspect and the action-aspect of the all-knowing wisdom practice represent the all-knowing wisdom practice. The key to separately delineating the boundaries of the three wisdoms in the treatises that explain the wisdom-aspect and the action-aspect also lies here. The second is that these three practices are also superior to the practice of the Hinayana, because they are distinguished by realizing the selflessness of phenomena such as the inconceivable. That is to say, the key to not separately delineating the boundaries of the three wisdoms in the treatises that explain the distinctive features also lies here. The basis is that the general Mahayana practice is merely the self-nature.

It is shown on the sixteen aspects. Specifically, the yoga of the basis of great vehicle knowledge is shown on the four, such as the nature of being free from afflictions. The yoga of the path knowledge is shown on the five, such as the nature of being difficult to do. The yoga of omniscience is shown on the seven, such as the nature of the object. In short, the sixteen aspects of nature are the signified, indicating that it is the yoga of the great vehicle. It indicates that it is the yoga of a bodhisattva who unites skillful means and wisdom, the yoga of the great vehicle is the signified, indicating that it is a yoga that surpasses the yoga of the lesser vehicle. It indicates that it is the yoga of a bodhisattva that is distinguished by realizing the selflessness of phenomena, such as the inconceivable. This is the general way of representing it. If we divide it specifically, the four, such as the nature of being free from afflictions, are the signified, indicating that it is the yoga of the basis of great vehicle knowledge. It indicates that it is the yoga of a bodhisattva who realizes the appearance of the Tathagata by relying on the mother (Prajnaparamita), the realization of the reality of the basis, and the three actions of protecting benefit and happiness. The yoga of the basis of great vehicle knowledge is the signified, indicating that it is a yoga that surpasses the yoga of the lesser vehicle. The characteristics are the same as before. The five, such as the nature of being difficult to do, are the signified, indicating that it is the yoga of the path knowledge. It indicates that it is the yoga of a bodhisattva who knows the three doors of liberation, etc., the realization of the reality of the path, and the seven actions of refuge, etc. The method of representing the characteristics by taking the yoga of the path knowledge as the signified is the same as before. The seven, such as the nature of the object, are the signified, indicating that it is the yoga of omniscience. It indicates that it is the yoga of a bodhisattva who knows how to abide in bliss in the present life, etc., the realization of the reality of aspects, and the one action of the basis. The method of representing the characteristics by taking the yoga of omniscience as the signified is the same as before. The key point is that when it is determined by hearing and thinking, the three knowledges are determined. When summarizing, it is also summarized in the form of three knowledges. Therefore, when it is shown that one must meditate on twenty yogas, each of the twenty
