The Blessed One also taught about the own-nature of the truths, as well as complete knowledge, abandonment, realization, and cultivation; about the own-nature of the elements, as well as various elements, multiple elements, abandonment, and complete knowledge; about the own-nature of the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, as well as incompatibility, antidotes, the unborn, arising, the arisen abiding, non-arising, again abiding, and increasing and expanding. The Blessed One also taught that all phenomena are without own-nature, all phenomena are unborn and unceasing, from the very beginning peaceful, and by nature completely passed beyond sorrow. So, with what intention did the Blessed One teach that all phenomena are without own-nature, all phenomena are unborn and unceasing, from the very beginning peaceful, and by nature completely passed beyond sorrow? I would like to ask the Blessed One, with what intention did the Blessed One teach this reason that all phenomena are without own-nature, all phenomena are unborn and unceasing, from the very beginning peaceful, and by nature completely passed beyond sorrow? Please explain this to me, Blessed One." There are three parts to the second topic: the way it is taught in the *Saṃdhinirmocana-sūtra* (Explication of the Thought), the way it is taught in the *Mahāyānasaṃgraha* (Compendium of Mahāyāna), and the way it is taught in the *Abhidharmasamuccaya* (Compendium of Topics of Manifest Knowledge). The first part has two sections: explaining the meaning of teaching emptiness of own-nature, and explaining the meaning of teaching the unborn, etc. The first section is: In the *Saṃdhinirmocana-sūtra*, the truly noble one of ultimate meaning taught that the three aspects of the emptiness of own-nature of phenomena are as follows: emptiness of characteristic own-nature, emptiness of arising own-nature, and emptiness of ultimate own-nature. He taught that all phenomena are empty of own-nature with these in mind. So, he taught emptiness with these three emptinesses of own-nature in mind. So, what are these three emptinesses of own-nature? How are they empty of own-nature? The first emptiness of own-nature is: In the *Saṃdhinirmocana-sūtra*, what is the emptiness of characteristic own-nature of phenomena? It is whatever is the characteristic of the completely imputed. Why is that? Because it is a characteristic that is established by name and convention, but it does not abide by its own characteristic. Therefore, it is called emptiness of characteristic own-nature.

Thus, with regard to the completely imputed, it is established that characteristics are without own-being, meaning that they are not established by their own characteristics. Secondly, in the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra, it is said, "What is the absence of own-being of the arising of phenomena? It is the characteristic of other-dependence of phenomena. Why is that? Because it arises from the power of other conditions, not from itself. Therefore, it is called the absence of own-being of arising." It means that other-dependence is the absence of own-being of arising, because the absence of own-being of arising must be established as arising by itself without relying on other conditions, while other-dependence arises from the power of other conditions. Among the three absences of own-being, there are two ways of establishing them. The establishment on other-dependence is as follows: In the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra, it is said, "What is the ultimate absence of own-being of phenomena? It is the dependent arising of phenomena. Those that are without own-being by the absence of own-being of arising are also without own-being by the ultimate absence of own-being. Why is that? Because for the ultimate pure noble dharmas, whatever is a pure object is ultimate, and it has been fully revealed. But the characteristic of other-dependence is not a pure object. Therefore, it is called the ultimate absence of own-being." Thus it is said. The establishment on the perfectly established is also mentioned in the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra: "Furthermore, the characteristic of the perfectly established of phenomena is also called the ultimate absence of own-being. Why is that? Because the selflessness of the ultimate pure noble dharmas is their absence of own-being. It is ultimate, and the ultimate is completely distinguished by the absence of own-being of all dharmas. Therefore, it itself is the ultimate absence of own-being." Thus it is said. The meaning of these is that when the ultimate is established on the pure object, the ultimate absence of own-being is established on other-dependence, because other-dependence is not a pure object. The ultimate of that dharma is also the absence of own-being of that dharma. When establishing the ultimate absence of own-being, it is established on the perfectly established, the perfect
