Question: Is the cognizing consciousness because it is a reversed object? Answer: Then, does the reversed consciousness exist by its own nature or not? If it is the former, it contradicts the fact that all phenomena are empty of inherent existence. If it is the latter, then based on the reversed object as a reason, it is not possible to establish that the object of cognition is empty of inherent existence. This is the first question. The second is, in summary, whatever clings to the nature of dependence and the nature of perfect consummation as appearing to be the nature of complete imputation should be understood as the nature of superimposition. It is not reasonable for the nature of dependence and the nature of perfect consummation to exist. This is what constitutes denigrating one's own characteristics. Therefore, one should comprehend the way of the meaning of that alone by abandoning the two extremes. It is said that by abandoning the superimposition of imputing dependence and perfect consummation as complete imputation, and by abandoning the denigration that dependence and perfect consummation are empty of their own nature, the nature of dependence and the emptiness of complete imputation upon it exist ultimately, which is Madhyamaka. This is the meaning. Third, from the way it is explained in the Madhyāntavibhāga, there is the way of abandoning superimposition and denigration, and thus there are two ways of establishing the Middle Way. The first is, in the Madhyāntavibhāga: 'The unreal conceptualization exists, in it the two do not exist, emptiness exists in this, in that this also exists.' And in its commentary, Sthiramati says: 'Some people think that all phenomena are like rabbit horns, completely without inherent existence. Therefore, in order to refute the denigration of everything, it is said, 'The unreal conceptualization exists.' This means that there is a remainder of the word 'inherently'.' If it is said that all phenomena are empty in general, does this contradict the sutras? It does not contradict, because it is said like this: 'In it the two do not exist.' The unreal conceptualization is called emptiness because it is devoid of the nature of the apprehended and the apprehender, but it is not that it is completely without inherent existence, therefore it does not contradict the sutras. If, like that, the two are completely non-existent like rabbit horns, and the unreal conceptualization exists inherently in the ultimate sense, then would emptiness not cease to exist? It is not so.

It is not so. Like this, emptiness is here. For the unreal, completely conceptualized, whatever does not have a grasper and a grasped, that is emptiness, therefore emptiness will not become non-existent, thus it is said. Its meaning is that to think that all dharmas are empty of their own nature is slander, therefore as its antidote, it should be said that other-powered is existent by its own characteristic. If so, then doesn't it contradict the general statement that all dharmas are empty? Answer: That refers to emptiness by imputation, so it does not contradict. If so, then wouldn't emptiness become empty by its own characteristic? Answer: The meaning of emptiness is not emptiness that is empty by its own entity, but emptiness that is empty of both grasper and grasped on the other-powered, therefore it will not become non-existent by its own characteristic. Thus it is said. Secondly, in the "Madhyāntavibhāga" (Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes): "Not empty, not non-empty, therefore all, are explained, by existence, by non-existence, by existence, that is the Middle Way." That is, since other-powered is established by its own characteristic, and it has already been explained that it does not contradict the meaning of the sutras, other-powered exists by its own characteristic, imputed is non-existent by its own characteristic, perfectly established exists by its own characteristic, that is the Middle Way that abandons the two extremes. Thus it is said. Thirdly, how he explains the holy teachings has three aspects: how doubt arises, explaining the answer that dispels doubt, therefore, the definite number is established for the three turnings of the wheel of dharma. Firstly, the basis for the arising of doubt is that in the first turning of the wheel, it was said that all dharmas have their own general characteristics, and in the second turning of the wheel, it was said that all dharmas do not have intrinsic nature, and so on. The way doubt arises is by thinking that the two are contradictory, thinking, what was meant by saying that all dharmas have their own general characteristics? What was meant by saying that all dharmas do not have intrinsic nature, and so on? Thus it was asked. In the "Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra" (Explanation of the Thought Sutra), it is said: The Blessed One also taught in many ways the self-nature of the aggregates, and also taught the nature of arising and the nature of ceasing, and also abandonment and complete knowledge. Just as the aggregates are, so also were taught the sense bases and dependent origination and the afflicted. Combine and say likewise.
