I impute specific characteristics through conceptual elaboration; these are all worldly terms. Dependent origination is described in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* as follows: 'What is the basis of the imputed characteristic of the object of conceptual elaboration, which is the characteristic of activity? That is the characteristic of dependence on others.' The meaning of 'characteristic of activity' is that it arises from causes and conditions. The object of conceptual elaboration becomes a characteristic of imputation, as before. Perfected nature is described in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* as follows: 'What is the basis of the imputed characteristic of the object of conceptual elaboration, which is the characteristic of activity? That characteristic is not fully established as the imputed characteristic, and its own nature is without its own nature, which is the absence of self in phenomena, which is suchness, the object of complete purification. That is the characteristic of perfected nature.' Its meaning is that on the basis of dependent origination, emptiness is established as emptiness only by the emptiness of imputation. One's own nature is the absence of self in phenomena, which is suchness, and when one meditates on what possesses five synonyms such as ultimate limit, the object that purifies obscurations becomes the realm of phenomena, which is included in perfected nature. In short, the basis for the arising of the appearance of the two aspects of grasper and grasped is the consciousness that arises from other causes and conditions, which is the uninterrupted continuum from beginningless samsara to the state of Buddhahood, and this is established as dependent origination. And when this dependent origination, due to the power of habit, manifests as a person and the two aspects of grasper and grasped, the object of the consciousness that appears in this way, the person and the two aspects of grasper and grasped, are established as imputation. Therefore, the conceptual elaboration mentioned as the object of conceptual elaboration is merely the non-veridical conceptual elaboration. When dependent origination is accompanied by the appearance of delusion, it is impure dependent origination; when the appearance of delusion temporarily ceases, it is the equipoise of the noble learner; and when it completely ceases, it is pure dependent origination in the state of Buddhahood. When the latter is divided into two perfected natures, it is the non-inverted perfected nature; when divided into three ultimate truths, there is the establishment of realization as the ultimate truth, but this is said with reference to the object of the perfected nature and the object of the ultimate truth.

As far as my realization goes, the ultimate truth is not a characteristic. If it were, it would have to be unconditioned, but it is conditioned. As it is said in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*: "Just as the eightfold noble path each has different characteristics, similarly, if the suchness of those dharmas, the ultimate, the absence of self in dharmas, also had different characteristics, then the suchness, the ultimate, the absence of self in dharmas, would also be with causes. If it arises from causes, then it would become conditioned. If it is conditioned, then it will not become ultimate." Also, as it is said in the *Madhyāntavibhāga*: "The ultimate meaning is one." And in its commentary it is also said: "The ultimate truth should be understood as the sole nature of the perfectly established." Also, as it is said in the *Mahāyānasaṃgraha*: "Not existent, not non-existent, not thus, not other, without arising and ceasing, without decrease, without increase, and without complete purity, complete purity is the characteristic of the ultimate." Thus it is proclaimed. Then, in the *Compendium*, it says: "Having made the dependent nature the power, in both the nominal and the ultimate, it should be understood as existing in that way." And in the *Essence of Wisdom Collected from All*, it says: "Free from grasping and the grasped, consciousness exists in the ultimate meaning, this is the Prajñāpāramitā, the tenets of the Yogācāra school." Thus, it is proclaimed that the dependent nature exists in the ultimate truth. Does this not contradict? If, according to the views of the two Śrāvakayāna schools, it exists in the ultimate truth, then it is necessarily the ultimate truth. However, according to the Yogācāra school, it is divided into two types: that which is established by its own characteristic as the ultimate, and that which has a completely pure object as the ultimate. The former does not pervade the ultimate truth, so there is no fault. In this way, if it is dependent nature, then it is necessarily conventional truth, because the ultimate truth has five characteristics, as explained in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* and the *Mahāyānasaṃgraha*. Moreover, the dependent nature is the same as the dependent nature, so the characteristic of "not suchness" is not established, and the characteristics of arising, ceasing, increasing, and decreasing are also not established. Then, in the *Madhyāntavibhāga*, it says: "The completely pure object of experience is twofold, it is said to be a single entity." Does this not contradict? There is no fault.
