These are the five valid means of apprehension. The second is, having refuted that the two are other substances, establishing that appearances such as form and mind are the same substance. The third is, co-occurrence is simultaneity, object is realization, and certainty is pervasiveness. The third is, the apprehension of the object of grasping, the external object, is not true, because the object of grasping, the external object, does not exist. For example, just as there is no executioner to be killed because there is no calf of a female yak to be killed. The fourth is, there are five kinds of self-continuing reasons for establishing that all phenomena are without inherent existence: examining the essence, one or many apart; examining the cause, the diamond slivers; examining the result, existence or non-existence, arising or ceasing; examining both, the four possibilities of arising or ceasing; examining all, the reason of dependent origination. The three intermediate reasons only prevent the proliferation of arising, but do not prevent the truth from the general aspect, so they are not the complete body of the Middle Way, while the first and last reasons prevent the truth from the general aspect, so they are the complete intelligence that establishes the absence of inherent existence. However, the first four reasons prevent the imputation of existence, but do not prevent the defamation of non-existence, while the reason of dependent origination prevents both imputation and defamation, so it is more powerful than the other reasons. Considering this, it is said in the Introduction: "Therefore, this reasoning of dependent arising can cut off all nets of evil views." So, how are these two prevented? Without inherent existence, because it is dependent arising; it exists in name, because it is dependent arising. It is also in this way. Among them, first in the reason of one or many apart, there are three: establishing the sign, stating the dharma, etc., and establishing the reason. The first is, this appearance of form, etc., is the dharma, it is not true, because it is separated from any one of true singularity and multitude. For example, like an image. Second, there is the meaning of the dharma, the meaning of the dharma to be established, the meaning of the object to be refuted, and the meaning of the reason. The first is that the appearance of form, etc., which is jointly manifested and established by both the Madhyamaka and the Realist, is merely taken as the dharma, not distinguished by being truly established, nor distinguished by being not truly established.

Appearances should not be regarded as dharma, because if the object to be known is dharma, then a common appearance must be established for both the opponent and oneself. The second is, wanting something like an unreal illusion, and wanting a mere negation of reality, a non-affirming negation. The former is unreasonable, because in the face of ultimate discriminating wisdom, there is no dharma that becomes a complete severance. Therefore, only the latter. Thirdly, some say that what is established from the object's own side, independent of the mind, is the meaning of reality, and that is what is to be refuted. Although the Svatantrika Madhyamikas do not directly admit reality, they are not true Madhyamikas because they admit the dharma established by its own characteristics, and thus admit real existence. So, is what is established by its own characteristics amenable to reason, or is it established? It is the latter. If it is the latter, then Chandrakirti will also admit the dharma established by its own characteristics, because he admits that all dharmas from form to omniscience are established by their own characteristics. If it is the former, then the Svatantrikas do not admit the dharma established as amenable to reason, because Master Simhabhadra said, "Samsara and purification are incompatible, and the antidote is merely the nature of an image." Master Yeshe Nyingpo said, "If by the power of reason, it is said that it does not arise even in name, that is true, therefore there, it exists as it appears." According to our own system, the object to be refuted by the Madhyamikas is divided into the object to be refuted in reality and the object to be refuted specifically. The former is the proliferation of the four extremes, and the latter is the object to be refuted by the mind of permanence that clings to the four extremes, which is the first extreme, and because of the power of habit, the innate clinging to reality that initially clings to reality, and when searching for the proof that its object exists in reality, although the proponents of various tenets have established many proofs, they all agree that it is amenable to reason. Therefore, the mind that clings to the meaning of what is amenable to analysis as existing in reality is the imputed clinging to reality, so there are two. There are also two kinds of reasoning for refuting, consequentialism and autonomy. The former refutes the reality of what is imputed, and the latter refutes the innate clinging to reality, and the proof is amenable to reason.
