When considering something as a subject of proof and arguing for its irreversibility, it is merely the actual demonstration of using any of the forty-four reasons as evidence. The intention behind this is that the teacher infers the prior realization of meditative equipoise from the signs of special conduct of body and speech in the subsequent attainment, which is the reason of the effect. Through the sign of possessing complete meditative equipoise, one argues for the nature reason that perfect enlightenment can arise without being interrupted by other vehicles. From the sign of being able to arise, one argues for irreversibility, which is the non-observation reason. Thus, three reasons are explained. The first of these is stated in the Don Sel (Meaning Clear): "Thus, it is shown by obtaining these, which are comprised of the sixteen moments of forbearance and knowledge." The second is shown by the very quotation from the commentary on the Pramāṇavārttika in the Great Commentary, as cited earlier. The third is shown by the statement in that same quotation, "The very suitability of application should be apprehended by subsequent inference," because suitability itself is taken as the sign, thereby showing that it is regarded as irreversible. The term "should be regarded" is because the sutra states, "A Bodhisattva who possesses those aspects, signs, and characteristics should be regarded as irreversible," which is an explanation of the sutra. May the protector Maitreya and the son of the Buddha, Simhabhadra, both be pleased. Thirdly, there are three aspects: the subject of the dharma, the meaning of the dharma to be proven, and the meaning of the reason. The first includes the Bodhisattva on the path of joining, those of sharp faculties, etc., as mentioned above. The second is that the dharma to be proven, which is the ultimate of the forty reasons, is irreversibility. Therefore, regarding this, there are three aspects: by what is it irreversible, from what is it irreversible, and an explanation of the meaning of irreversibility. The first of these: Some say that, in general, irreversibility is of two types: irreversibility by intention and irreversibility by practice. Here, it is irreversibility by intention, because once one has attained the Mahayana path of joining, it is impossible to regress by intention. For if one regresses by intention after attaining it, one must also regress by practice. If one regresses by intention, one must abandon the conventional Bodhicitta of the Mahayana that is present in one's own mindstream, and if one abandons that, one must also abandon the practice of the six perfections. If one says this, then if one is a Mahayana practitioner on the path of joining, then self-benefit also

It is pervaded that the thought of giving up is impossible to arise. If so, it is pervaded by not turning back from the mind. If you admit, then there is no difference between the Mahayana practitioner who has previously realized the Shravaka Arya and the one who enters the Mahayana path from the very beginning, whether or not the thought of benefiting oneself arises again and again, because of admitting that. If you admit, then there is no difference between the two in obtaining the realization of Mahayana, because of admitting that. It is pervasive and cannot be admitted, because the Ornament says, "Those two again and again." Furthermore, it is impossible for the mind of a Bodhisattva with dull faculties who is in the impure seven grounds to arise with the thought of benefiting himself, because of that promise. It cannot be admitted, because the Vajrasekhara Sutra says, "Even though the son of the Victorious One has attained the ground, he is not steadfast, as long as he has not attained the eighth ground, he is afraid of the inferior vehicle." If the meaning of that sutra is that there is fear of falling into the inferior vehicle in the state of the impure seven grounds, then that is not present in that state, because it is impossible for the thought of benefiting oneself to arise in that state. It is a real refutation. Therefore, in our own system, in general, to prove non-retrogression, there are two ways to prove non-retrogression by mind and effort. What is to be proved by reasoning is: In terms of arrangement, non-retrogression is arranged without separating mind and effort, and in terms of progress, non-retrogression is achieved through effort, because these individuals, with these reasons, only prove that they will not temporarily enter the Hinayana path and attain perfect enlightenment. Non-retrogression by the power of mind is not the meaning of non-retrogression here, because what is to be proved here is the non-retrogression of a Bodhisattva with dull faculties in the impure ground? Because that itself can be reversed by the power of mind. The second is that the teacher Dharmamitra said that there are four types of non-retrogression: mere enlightenment, that which is special, that which is beyond the world, and that which is effortless, but here the second one should be taken. Third, there are two aspects: refutation and establishment. First, some say that the non-retrogression mentioned here
