What occasion is this? Because it must be admitted that it is not the stage of subsequent attainment, so even if one reaches the edge of a cliff, one cannot turn back. Therefore, regarding the view that the reality of objects is truly established, but truth does not appear in the equipoise of the noble ones, Jetsun Drakpa Gyaltsen said: The Yogacharas also consider themselves Madhyamikas, although they believe that the wisdom of the Buddha is free from all elaboration, but it contradicts your own view, so it is not established to think that way. Thus refuting and establishing the tenet. This statement should be lifted up and placed on the top of the head, for if the reality of objects is truly established, then it contradicts the wisdom that realizes reality not appearing as true. Those who cling to eternalism and, for the sake of comfortable conduct, borrow the tenets of others with coarse minds say that there is no difference between the Sakya and Jonang schools in the key points of their views. This is what Jetsun Drakpa Gyaltsen said: If you say that it exists in the ultimate sense, then because you fall into the extreme of existence, it will become not the path of the Madhyamikas. If you say that you believe it does not exist in the ultimate sense, then you will also fall into the extreme of non-existence. We do not believe that it exists in the ultimate sense, so we do not believe that it does not exist. Then what do you believe? We believe as it exists in the conventional sense, liberated from the extreme of annihilation in the conventional sense, and not believing in anything in the ultimate sense, so liberated from all extremes, therefore it is called Madhyamika. They have not even seen these words. Therefore, regarding truth, as it is said in the scriptures: Nirvana is the only truth. Like this, taking non-deception as truth, and taking what is refuted as truly established in the ultimate sense, between these two, the first, the Madhyamikas also believe that it exists in name, and as long as they accept the truth dependent on the latter, there is no opportunity to become Madhyamikas. They have already shown the distinction without distortion for the first view. (Refuting the view that annihilationism is Madhyamika.) Now, I will briefly discuss some logical analysis of the second view. Since the clinging to reality, which grasps things as true, is the root of all faults, it is extremely reasonable to refute its object of clinging, but

To consider that the emptiness of mere negation, which cannot be found when sought with reason, is the very nature of ultimate truth, and to consider that attachment to that emptiness is not something to be refuted, is to go beyond the tenets of the Madhyamaka school. In the Svavrtti on the Two Truths, a sutra is quoted: "What is conventional truth? It is all the designations, letters, languages, and expressions of the world. What is ultimate truth? If there is no activity of mind, what need is there to even mention letters?" The meaning of this is found in the Two Truths: "Even the all-knowing one, who knows the existence and non-existence of things, does not see it. What is the nature of that thing? Examine it with extremely subtle view." Therefore, the nature of ultimate truth is that which transcends the realm of the minds of ordinary beings, and even with the stainless wisdom of the noble ones' meditative equipoise, the appearance of duality vanishes, and one does not see any extreme such as existence or non-existence, permanence or annihilation. This is said to be ultimate truth. If one thinks that this is the view of the Svatantrika school, then there is no difference between them and the Prasangikas. The glorious Chandrakirti said: "By seeing all things as truly false, one will grasp the two natures of things. That which is seen as true is that very nature, and seeing as false is said to be conventional truth." And in the Bodhicaryavatara it says: "Ultimate is not the object of mind, mind is considered to be conventional." The correct seeing mentioned here is the stainless meditative equipoise of the noble ones, and all worldly minds are false seeing. Therefore, the emptiness of mere negation, which is the object of conceptual cognition that is sought but cannot be found, must be established as conventional. If, at times, the emptiness of mere negation, which is merely the negation of truth, is said to be ultimate truth, and the teacher Chandrakirti says in the commentary on the Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning: "The establishment of the two truths is established in relation to the minds of worldly people," if one thinks that this is contradictory, then it is in relation to the mind that grasps at truth that one realizes the absence of truth. Therefore, to establish its object as ultimate is to establish it as a nominal ultimate truth. The reason for the imputation is that in relation to the mind that grasps at truth, one realizes the nature of reality.
