When a Mind-Only practitioner trains in Madhyamaka, after having established that other-powered natures are without inherent existence, it is necessary to assert that there remains a residue of clinging to reality in the thoroughly established nature of reality. Merely acknowledging the common basis of other-powered natures and non-inherent existence does not make one not a Mind-Only practitioner, because the appearances that form the basis of the debate over true and false aspects do not transcend other-powered natures. Therefore, the Mind-Only practitioners who assert false aspects would also have the fault of not being Mind-Only practitioners. If one thinks that those appearances are also imputations, then it would be inconsistent to assert that they are true as asserted by the Mind-Only practitioners who assert true aspects, because they are imputations. So how is it? The venerable omniscient Jowo Je said that this system is the strongest view of Mind-Only, but it has not quite reached the view of Madhyamaka, which is indeed the case, because it has already established that other-powered natures are without inherent existence, and there remains a residue of clinging to reality in the thoroughly established nature. Moreover, it has accepted the direct teachings of the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra as definitive meaning. Furthermore, it has used the term "Great Madhyamikas" for the brothers Asaṅga and Vasubandhu, Dignāga, and Dharmakīrti, and has accepted their treatises as Madhyamaka treatises. Moreover, the way to explain the meaning of the scriptures is mainly through the three aspects of imputation, other-powered nature, and thoroughly established nature. Some followers say that this is not a Mind-Only system, because it is a realist system. If it is a realist system, then it must accept the common basis of things and true establishment, but here it has accepted that if something is a thing, it is pervaded by not being true, so this statement is unreasonable, because there is no difference in meaning except for accepting excessive contradiction, because it has accepted the common basis of knowledge and true establishment. If one thinks that because it accepts the treatises of the noble Nāgārjuna as valid, it is a Madhyamaka system, this is also uncertain, because it cannot refute Nāgārjuna, so it distorts his treatises and applies them to its own system. It is not at all the intention of Nāgārjuna, because in the Root Wisdom it says: "Since birth, abiding, and destruction are not established, there are no conditioned phenomena. Since conditioned phenomena are not established, how can unconditioned phenomena be established?" If true establishment exists, then true

If conditioned phenomena, which are worthy of being established, are not established as true, then why are unconditioned phenomena established as true? This is what was said. Because you consider unconditioned phenomena to be perfectly established and truly established. If you say there is no fault, then, in this treatise and in the *Refutation of Debate*: "If I have some vows, therefore I have these faults. Because I have no vows, I am only without fault." And "Also, one does not say emptiness," etc., all the statements of freedom from the four extremes are occasions for refutation in equipoise, not occasions for discrimination in subsequent attainment. The meaning of refutation in equipoise is that in the presence of the equipoise of the noble ones, none of the phenomena of conditioned and unconditioned appear as true, and one does not grasp at any of the four extremes such as existence and non-existence. Therefore, this is explaining the way of grasping of the uncontaminated wisdom of equipoise. The meaning of discrimination in subsequent attainment is also that when examining the reality of objects in subsequent attainment, one distinguishes "This is established as true, this is not established as true." Thus it is said. That is very unreasonable. If saying that unconditioned phenomena are not established is an occasion for refutation in equipoise, then it must also be considered that saying that conditioned phenomena are not established is also an occasion for refutation in equipoise, and it is also considered that way. If that is the case, then examining and refuting the three characteristics of arising, abiding, and ceasing with reason would be an absurd consequence. Therefore, this is an occasion for discrimination in subsequent attainment, because the grasping of truth is mostly involved in the five aggregates of conditioned phenomena. Therefore, the reasoning for establishing conditioned phenomena as not truly existent is explained in detail. Because the grasping of truth in unconditioned phenomena is very small, the reasoning for establishing it as not truly existent is not explained in detail. Rather, because the object to be refuted, conditioned phenomena, is not established as true, it is summarized and said that the unconditioned phenomena that refutes it is also not established as true. This is the wonderful way of explaining of the great scholars of India, just as the glorious Dharmakirti explained in detail the reasoning for eliminating and establishing word concepts with objects of entities, and then summarized the reasoning for eliminating and establishing word concepts with objects of non-entities in one verse. The meaning of the verses of the *Refutation of Debate*, if applied to the occasion of refutation in equipoise, then the Madhyamikas refute
