When applying names such as "That is so-and-so's ear," by virtue of that name, it is determined that there is Devadatta and Devadatta's ear, etc., and there is no other way of determining it besides that, which is the meaning of the name. When searching for what is signified by that name, even if it is not found, causality, etc., are established merely by the act of naming, which is the uncommon point of this school. Within the category of conventional truth, the way of establishing causality without a basis is that even though there is no ālaya, the way of establishing karmic results is as follows: If the action ceases immediately after it is done, then that action does not go to the result, so how can the action that has ceased for a long time produce the result? In this regard, the Vaibhāṣika school believes that when the action ceases, the action produces something non-depleting, and it produces the result. The Sautrāntika school believes that the action produces something obtained, and it produces the result. The Cittamatra school believes that the action leaves an imprint on the ālaya-vijñāna, and then that imprint produces the result of the action, all of which are the views of other schools that believe that karmic results are inherently established. Having refuted these views, here it is believed that the action produces a destructible object, and then it produces the result of the action, which is the uncommon key point. In the place of a bowl filled with water, six kinds of beings will have six different appearances of water and pus and blood, etc. Since there is no difference between correct and incorrect for those eye consciousnesses, just as there is the substance of water, the substance of other things is also the same. Third, the meanings that extend from these are: the definition of the two obscurations, the definition of the two selves, the difference between the Great and Small Vehicles in terms of abandonment and realization, the way of admitting external objects by not admitting ālaya and self-awareness, and the way of not having one's own system of reasoning and commitment, these five. The first point is: the object of knowledge obscuration, the belief in the self of phenomena, which is admitted by other Madhyamikas, is considered by this school to be the afflictive obscuration, because it is ignorance, which is one of the twelve links of dependent origination. The object of knowledge obscuration, as stated in the auto-commentary of the *Entering the Middle Way*, is the habit of affliction, therefore, the habit of affliction and its result, the appearance of duality, are the part of confusion. The second point is: the teacher Sthiramati believes that the mind consciousness is the person, and this school believes that the innate ego-grasping grasps the self.

The object of focus for holding the thought "I am" is just the "I," and the object grasped by the manner of grasping is that which is truly established. Therefore, the first is also a person, and also the self, and the latter is the self of the person. The self of phenomena, if things have something that is independently established without relying on others, then that is what is designated as the self of phenomena. Thirdly, all vehicles, both great and small, are the same in realizing emptiness by merely negating the truth as previously explained, and there is no realization beyond that, so there is no difference in view. If one thinks that there will be no difference in whether or not one can abandon the cognitive obscurations, then the difference in whether or not one can abandon the cognitive obscurations arises from the difference in the length of time of habituation, and the difference in the companions of conduct such as compassion and bodhicitta. For the antidote to cognitive obscurations, there is no antidote that is superior or different from the view of realizing emptiness as before. Regarding the difference in abandonment, the Hearer Arhat abandons all the afflictive obscurations, so he abandons all grasping at truth. But the Great Vehicle does not abandon grasping at truth until the eighth ground is attained, so in the case of the seven impure grounds, the manifestation of grasping at truth occurs. Therefore, in the state of the seven impure grounds, only the afflictive obscurations are abandoned, and until the grasping at truth, together with its seeds, is destroyed, it is impossible to abandon the cognitive obscurations, so the ultimate boundary for abandoning the cognitive obscurations is held from the eighth ground onwards. Therefore, in this system, according to the view of establishing grasping at truth as cognitive obscuration, it is not accepted that the cognitive obscurations are divided into nine types, small, medium, and large, and then abandoned by the nine paths of cultivation, such as the second ground, etc., which will be explained further later. In any of the three vehicles, before attaining the path of seeing, by manifestly realizing and constantly habituating the sixteen aspects of the four truths, such as impermanence, etc., there is one person who has abandoned the manifest afflictions of the three realms. But because he has not realized the selflessness of phenomena, he cannot even abandon the manifest afflictions of grasping at truth as afflictions, he only abandons the manifest afflictions with objects and aspects as explained in the Abhidharma. And, from the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "The root of the doctrine is the monastic itself." From that, therefore, emptiness should be meditated upon.
