Because there is the fault of regression. Furthermore, the clinging to truth, which is the clinging to the belief that phenomena are real, is ignorance, which is one of the twelve links of dependent origination. As it says in the "Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness": "Whatever thought regards things born from causes and conditions as real, the Buddha said that is ignorance, and from that the twelve links arise." To think that this scripture teaches that is the conduct of those whose intelligence is very coarse, because that scripture states that the clinging to the belief that phenomena are real is the cause of the twelve links, but it does not state that it is one of the twelve links. If you think that that scripture has stated that such a clinging to truth is ignorance, then there is no fault, because there are two kinds of ignorance: ignorance that has become a cognitive obscuration and ignorance that has become an emotional obscuration. Of these, the former is the cause of the twelve links, and the latter is one of the twelve links, because that very scripture has stated it. Therefore, even though the clinging to the belief that phenomena are real is a cognitive obscuration, as it says in the "Four Hundred Stanzas": "It is said to be the seed of existence," this refers to being the cause of ignorance, which is included in the twelve links, but it does not mean that it is an emotional obscuration. Regarding the fact that the clinging to the truth of phenomena is a cognitive obscuration, the venerable Maitreya and Nagarjuna seem to have the same view, because both of them say that the seven links of the result, which are included in the twelve links, arise from the five links of the cause, and that the links of the cause arise from the conceptual thought that has become the clinging to the truth of phenomena. How so? As it says in the "Root Wisdom": "Actions and afflictions arise from conceptual thought." and the conceptual thought, and as it says in the "Precious Garland": "As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, at that time there is clinging to self." and the clinging to the aggregates, and as it says in the "Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness", the ignorance stated by the first three lines quoted earlier, and as it says in the "Four Hundred Stanzas": "The seed of existence is consciousness." and the consciousness, and the conceptual thought of substance-clinging with regard to phenomena as explained in the "Ornament of Clear Realization", and the apprehended thought with regard to truth-clinging, and as it says in the "Uttaratantra": "That is, the aggregates, elements, and sense faculties abide in actions and afflictions. Actions and afflictions are not in accordance with the mind.
