These explanations are made in terms of the common realization of all three vehicles. And the very selflessness of phenomena, after being extensively divided, is considered to be taught by what follows as the uncommon realization of the Great Vehicle. While establishing that hearers and self-realizers have realization of the selflessness of phenomena, in the commentary on "Selflessness is for the sake of liberating beings," it says: For them, the selflessness of persons is shown for the liberation of self-realized Buddhas and hearers, while bodhisattvas, having attained omniscience, show both for the sake of being liberated. And, in the root text, it says: It is also explained in the Great Vehicle. And, in order to be consistent with the statements that hearers and self-realizers do not fully meditate on the selflessness of phenomena. Therefore, now the second general meaning, explaining the emptiness realized by the Great Vehicle, has four parts: the way of extensively distinguishing from the aspect of need; that itself is shown as the realization of the Great Vehicle; extensively explaining from the aspect of the subject of emptiness; stating the scriptural source and showing the previous collection. The first is, selflessness, etc. In the commentary on this, immediately following the previously quoted passage, it says: Although hearers and self-realized Buddhas also only see this much of dependent origination and conditions, even so, they do not fully meditate on the selflessness of phenomena. There is only a method for abandoning the afflictions that operate in the three realms. Some people say about its meaning that, as previously explained, the selflessness of phenomena is not fully meditated on in terms of types and times, that is, there is full meditation on the antidote to the seeds of afflictions, but there is no full meditation on the antidote to the obscuration of knowledge. This writing contradicts the view that there is no antidote to the obscuration of knowledge during the seven impure grounds. Is it necessary or not to extensively meditate on the selflessness of phenomena in terms of types and times in order to abandon only the afflictive obscuration? If it is as in the former case, it contradicts the view that hearers and self-realizers do not have it. If it is as in the latter case, then what is its purpose during the seven impure grounds? Think carefully. The second is, elaboration, etc. As it is said: Subhuti, furthermore, the Great Vehicle of the bodhisattva is like this.

Inner emptiness, outer emptiness, inner-outer emptiness, emptiness of emptiness, great emptiness, ultimate emptiness, conditioned emptiness, unconditioned emptiness, emptiness beyond extremes, emptiness without beginning or end, emptiness without abandonment, self-nature emptiness, emptiness of all phenomena, self-characteristic emptiness, imperceptible emptiness, emptiness of the nature of non-things. Thus it is said. Having thus taught the sixteen emptinesses, Subhuti, furthermore, the existent is empty of the existent. The non-existent is empty of the non-existent. Self-nature is empty of self-nature. Other things are empty of other things. Thus, again, the four emptinesses are taught. These emptinesses are called the Great Vehicle. Emptiness or non-emptiness, there is not even a little, but in such a way, according to the minds of the beings to be tamed, like form and so on, it is only conventionally designated. Thus it is said. The third has two parts: explaining the sixteen expanded distinctions, and explaining the four condensed distinctions. The first has sixteen, the first being inner emptiness, which is why, etc. The first two lines show that the eye is empty of its own nature, and that the nature of the eye is inner emptiness. Then the next two lines illustrate the other five sense bases. Then the next two lines show the proof of emptiness of self-nature. The last two lines show that the absence of self-nature of the six inner sense bases is inner emptiness. This also applies to the other emptinesses. Here, some people in the translation on page 52 say: That which does not abide permanently is called not abandoning its own nature. That also remains for a short time and then changes, so it is not indestructible. It is said that this is what is meant. It would be said that whatever thing has a self-nature must inevitably be impermanent and impermanent. Such a translation seems to be a mistake, because that which abides permanently should be explained as not abandoning its own nature, and that which has a self-nature
