Just as things arise from the four great elements of earth, water, fire, and wind. For example, blue things and so on that arise from the four great elements as causes, and eyes and so on, although they are nominally established, the two are not merely an aggregation of the four great elements. Similarly, the self (ātman, आत्मन्, ātman, I) which is nominally established with the aggregates as its cause, cannot merely be an aggregation. As it is said, this shows that relying on the aggregates to nominally establish a self, relying on the four great elements to nominally establish what arises from the four great elements, relying on the shape of a vase to nominally establish a vase, and so on, all things that are nominally established as having parts by taking the parts as causes are the same. Moreover, just as relying on the collection of parts is called a chariot, similarly, relying on the aggregates is called a conventional being. It seems that this sutra is taken as a basis, so the sutra says "sentient being," and the root and commentary here say "self," and it should be known that these are different names. Therefore, the view that the self, the person, and the sentient being are different names is the doctrine of the non-Buddhist heretics. To say this is to speak arbitrarily, and it will be discussed below. The second is, shape and so on. The third is, taker and so on. As the Root Wisdom says: "If the wood is fire, the agent and the action will become one." And "Fire and wood in the manner of taking, together with pots, clothes, etc., are all explained in detail." And, the commentary says: "Here, the taker is the self, and what is taken are the five aggregates." This shows that it is also admitted that I am a nominal term. The third, relying on the scriptures to summarize the previous conclusion is, because and so on. The sutra quoted in the commentary says: "Great King, the puruṣa, the pudgala, they are the six elements, the six sense spheres, and the eighteen mental activities." The meaning of this sutra is stated in the root: "Because the Thubpa said 'I'." And, the commentary says: "Because it is nominally established as 'I' through the elements and so on." This shows that the puruṣa, the pudgala, and the self are three different names. Third, if the self and the aggregates are one, then there will be the fault of mixing up abandonment and intimacy, that is, no-self and so on. The self-sect that considers the self and the aggregates to be one, clinging to the coemergent

The self that is the object of birth is the aggregates. When realizing no-self, one abandons the permanent self. To hold such a view is to show a contradiction in commitment. The example of this is shown by the later verses. Some people do not understand this and think that realizing the absence of the imputed self does not necessarily lead to the realization of the absence of the innate self, because the imputed self is not the innate self. This is how they explain the meaning. Thus, this shows that among the self and other schools, many who want to ascertain the suchness of things, because they do not understand how the object of grasping by the innate self-grasping is refuted, they abandon it. And all the assertions that ascertain the suchness other than that are laboring in a place devoid of essence. It is written that understanding this is extremely important. To this, the wise among the wise say that if this is the case, then because the four extremes of birth are negated, the birth that has become the object of the innate should not be negated. Because the four extremes of birth are imputed. Having said this, there is no answer. Similarly, the self of the person who has become the object of the innate, and the way in which the person is composed of the five aggregates, should also be combined and explained. Therefore, this is showing a contradiction in commitment to the opponent who believes that the imputed self and the innate self are different entities. And the key to negating the imputed self, and thus the innate self being negated, is that among the self and other schools, all those who assert the imputed self, when seeking the innate self with reason, believe that the imputed self is the very innate self. Therefore, not seeing the proof, the mind that grasps the established is reversed. The self-school that believes that the self and the aggregates are one also believes that the aggregates are the self, which is imputed. Therefore, in reality, it is also included in the previous view. Third, refuting the establishment as the dependent and the depended upon, i.e., the aggregates, etc., the self exists in the way that it depends on the aggregates, and the aggregates exist in the way that they depend on the self. These two are not even acknowledged in name, because the dependent and the depended upon must be different entities, like a cane and a cane seat, or a heavy object and a support. Some say that the self does not exist on the aggregates in the way that it inherently depends, and those aggregates do not exist on the self in the way that they inherently depend, and at the end
