A mind without regret due to joy, a mind without defilement due to equanimity, a mind that does not change due to emptiness, a mind without obscurations due to no characteristics, and a mind that does not abide due to no aspirations. As the Ratnavali says, "Its root is Bodhicitta, as stable as the king of mountains." Consider well why this is not contradictory. If one says that the non-dual wisdom, for those of great vehicle lineage with sharp faculties, first establishes the non-dual wisdom, and then there is the generation of Bodhicitta, thus refuting the fault. However, it still cannot refute the fault, because how can the non-dual wisdom that precedes compassion and Bodhicitta become the cause of a Bodhisattva? Therefore, this fault still needs to be refuted. In short, after much deliberation, the three—compassion, Bodhicitta, and non-dual wisdom—spoken of here have become something that is not the three characteristics. If one thinks well, it is a self-defeating explanation. Third, showing compassion as the main thing, why? Because it says, "Because compassion is..." To generate the Dharma of the Buddhas, the first thing like a seed is the method of generating Bodhicitta and non-dual wisdom, as previously explained. The middle stage of growth is like water, which means that even if Bodhicitta has been generated, if it is not repeatedly watered with the water of compassion, one will surely enter Nirvana in the realm of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. As the noble Vimuktisena said, "If one does not cultivate the four immeasurables such as love in the eighth moment, then in the ninth moment, one will fall into cessation without regard for the realm of sentient beings." And, "In the eighth Bhumi, if the Buddhas do not awaken one from the cessation of all elaborations, then at that time one will enter Nirvana." This has the same meaning as the previous statement, which is the Nirvana of those who have the intention of temporarily cutting off the benefit of sentient beings. In the stage of the path of accumulation, if one is separated from compassion, one may also become a Hinayana Nirvana by nature. Finally, in the state of enjoyment, like a fruit ripening, it means that although one has attained the state of limitless fruits in the way of holding on to investigation, one still needs compassion.

If it does not fully mature, it will not be used closely for a long time. Therefore, for the arising of the Buddha's Dharma, bodhicitta is essential in the beginning, middle, and end, and it is also the root of non-dual wisdom. Therefore, the teacher Chandrakirti praised compassion at the beginning of writing the treatise. The second is the actual praise with reasons. The first is "I" etc. Here, for the three kinds of compassion, there are two kinds of views from other schools and the uncommonness of this school. The first is that in the Ornament of the Sutras, the four immeasurables such as loving-kindness are divided into three types: those with sentient beings as objects, those with Dharma as objects, and those with no objects. The first is with sentient beings as objects, and its aspects are the aspect of wishing to be accompanied by happiness, to be free from suffering, not to be separated from happiness, and to have equanimity free from attachment and aversion. The second is to enter the teachings that show the four immeasurables as the content to be expressed, and the third is to enter the suchness of the four immeasurables. The person who is the basis is also said in the Bodhisattva-bhumi that the first is common with the heretics, the second is common with the Shravakas, and the third is the uncommonness of the Bodhisattvas. In the Inexhaustible Wisdom Sutra, it is said that the first is the ordinary Bodhisattva, the second is common with the Bodhisattvas who dwell on the impure seven grounds, and the third is the pure three grounds. The second is divided into three types: separately explaining the objects, commonly explaining the aspects, and summarizing the key points and explaining them. The first is that in the old commentary of this treatise, it is said: "Now, from the perspective of entering the differences of objects, the differences of the nature of compassion itself should also be clearly elucidated." In the old commentary of "Sentient beings tremble," it is said: "In order to clarify compassion with Dharma as the object and compassion with no object through the object," therefore, it is said that these three kinds of compassion are distinguished through the object. This has three meanings symbolized by three metaphors. The first is: Due to the attachment to self and what belongs to self, sentient beings are like buckets floating in the three realms, without autonomy. If it is like a bucket floating, what is in common? There are six characteristics, namely, being tightly bound by the ropes of karma and afflictions, and the one who rotates the wheel is the Alaya consciousness.
