It is the mind that seeks to attain pure Bodhi. As it is said in the Ratnavali: 'Oneself and this world, those who wish to attain unsurpassed Bodhi, the root of it is Bodhicitta, as stable as the king of mountains, and compassion that reaches the ends of the directions, and wisdom that does not rely on duality.' So it is said. Second, the compassionate one, being saddened by the suffering of others, in order to protect them, liberates these beings from suffering and resolves to unite them with the state of Buddhahood, and thus generates a definite mind. This vow cannot be accomplished without non-dual wisdom, so it is certain to enter into non-dual wisdom. This order is as it is said in the Ratnavali: 'Which Mahayana Dharma, compassion precedes all actions, and explains immaculate wisdom, who with a mind will destroy it?' This is said according to that. In general, this order and other sharp-witted Mahayana lineage individuals first establish the view of suchness, and then generate compassion for sentient beings who have not realized it, and thus there are two orders and ways of entering the generation of Mahayana mind. As it is said in the Madhyamakalankara: 'After first leading the correct knowledge, having truly determined the ultimate truth, to the world dwelling in the thicket of evil views, constantly striving with compassion, those who are brave to benefit beings, the wise scholars who have increased Bodhi, adorned with wisdom and compassion, truly practice the conduct of the Buddha, following with true faith, generating the perfect Bodhicitta, having taken up the conduct of the Buddha, they strive for correct knowledge.' As it is said, the intention of both Maitreya and Nagarjuna also has both, and their followers, the Panditas of Svatantrika and Prasangika, and the former scholars of Tibet also all assert both. Third, if asked from where to start counting, from the boundary of the Buddha-son in the saying that the Buddha-son is born from three causes? In the Uttaratantra it says: 'Impure, impure pure, and extremely pure, there are four orders, called sentient beings, Bodhisattvas, and Tathagatas.' Thus it is said, the nature of mind is impure by what is to be abandoned by seeing

Here, it is said that in the state of being with outflows, one is a sentient being; in the state of having purified the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing but not yet purified the afflictions to be abandoned by meditation, one is a Bodhisattva; and in the state of having purified both obscurations, one is a fully enlightened Buddha. Likewise, here also, from the arising of conventional mind generation in the continuum up to the stage of Buddhahood, dividing it into three stages—the stage of an ordinary being, the stage of a Bodhisattva, and the stage of a Tathagata—the Bodhisattva is established only in the stage of a Bodhisattva. Below it says, "From then on, having attained that, it is declared by the name Bodhisattva." The meaning is the same. If you think, "Don't you accept that a Bodhisattva arises from the three causes of the stage of the accumulation path, like a Bodhisattva of the stage of the path of preparation?" The measure of a Bodhisattva arising from compassion and conventional Bodhicitta, although it is said in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra that the mere arising of that mind in the continuum establishes the designation, the measure of a Bodhisattva arising from non-dual wisdom must necessarily be established in the noble ones, because the mother of realizing selflessness is present in both the accumulation and preparation paths, but the son born from it must necessarily be established in the noble ones, and the key point is the same. Therefore, although here it is accepted that the prince of the first ground arises from practicing the three causes in the stage of an ordinary being, it is not that the three dharmas are absent before that. For example, in the Ratnagotravibhāga, although it is said that the prince who directly sees the Tathāgatagarbha arises from practicing the four—the seed of faith in the Mahāyāna dharma, the wisdom mother of realizing selflessness, the womb of meditation, and the wet nurse of compassion—in the stage of an ordinary being, it is not that the four dharmas are absent before that. Some people think that, in this way, which of these three is established as the cause of the Bodhisattva, is the minimum the first Bodhisattva who has entered the path? Or not? If so, it is not reasonable to establish the Mahāyāna mind generation as its cause, because as soon as that is attained, it must be established as a Bodhisattva. It is also not reasonable to establish the wisdom that does not rely on the two extremes as the cause of the Bodhisattva, because Bodhisattvas first generate the conventional Bodhicitta, and then study the six pāramitās, the practice of a Bodhisattva.
