In order to show that it is worthy of praise to have the nature of completely saving immeasurable beings, it is said. There are three aspects to this: the way in which the Hearers and Solitary Realizers arise from the Buddha; the way in which the Buddhas arise from the Bodhisattvas; therefore, the Bodhisattvas are worthy of praise. The first has three aspects: the actual way in which they arise; examining doubts about this; and the meaning of the terms Hearer and Solitary Realizer. The first is that the Hearers and Solitary Realizers arise from the Bhagavan Shakyamuni Buddha, because he taught dependent arising without error, and through the sequence of hearing, thinking, and meditating, their faith increases as they wish, so that the enlightenment of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers becomes complete. The second is, if that is so for the four visible dharmas, how is it for the other Hearers and Solitary Realizers? They also, like the ripening of karma that is certain to be experienced in another lifetime, even if they become skilled in the ultimate meaning from hearing the close teaching of dependent arising in this life, they will not attain nirvana in this life alone, but they will certainly attain it in another lifetime, as it is said in the Four Hundred: If by knowing that, one does not attain cessation here, in another life, without effort, one will certainly attain it, like karma. Therefore, those of the Solitary Realizer lineage also, after hearing the Dharma of dependent arising from the Buddha for a hundred eons, manifest self-arisen enlightenment in a realm without Buddhas or Hearers, on the basis of their last existence, so they arise from the Buddha. As it is said in the Root Verses on the Middle Way: When the perfect Buddhas have not appeared, and the Hearers have also ceased, the wisdom of the Solitary Realizer arises without dependence. The third is, why are they called Hearers and intermediate Buddhas? Because after obtaining the fruit of hearing the true instructions, they cause others to hear it, so they are Hearers. The way of causing to hear is like this: I have done this, I do not know another existence other than this, and so on. Or, having heard the path of the complete Buddha from the Thus-Gone One, they proclaim it to those who seek its meaning, so they are Hearers. As it says in the Lotus Sutra of the True Dharma: Protector, today I

We are Shravakas. (Tibetan) We truly proclaim the supreme Bodhi. (Tibetan) We highly praise the sound of Bodhi. (Tibetan) Therefore, we Shravakas are like the inexhaustible. (Tibetan) As it is said. This is because the Sanskrit word for Shravaka (श्रावक, śrāvaka, listener, hearer) emphasizes hearing and proclaiming. If Bodhisattvas also become Shravakas? Even so, it is only proclaiming. Whoever does not cultivate accordingly is a Shravaka, so it will not cause fault to Bodhisattvas. Regarding the meaning of the previous etymological explanation, some wise men, such as Tsongkhapa (1), say that even if this etymological explanation does not exist for some people such as Shravakas in the formless realm, there is no fault. Because the sound itself is used as a name, there is a reason for etymological explanation, so it is not pervasive. For example, a lotus that grows on dry land is also called by the sound of a sea-born lotus. This statement is unreasonable, because Shravakas in the formless realm also universally obtain the path of seeing on the basis of the previously desired support, and the path of seeing is also the result of hearing the correct teachings. Therefore, when obtaining the path of seeing, the words obtained from hearing are often spoken in the Vinaya Pitaka. Otherwise, when Shravaka Arhats perform actions such as walking, standing, sleeping, and sitting, it is also necessary to eliminate the doubt that "even without this etymological explanation, it is okay." Like this, things have been done. (Tibetan) Apart from this, I do not know other existences, this is just a symbol. The reason for calling Pratyekabuddhas intermediate Buddhas is that the commentary says: "The sound of Buddha applies to the Tathata of Buddha, Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Anuttara-samyak-sambuddhas." Its meaning is that the sound of Buddha (Sanskrit, बुद्ध, buddha, awakened one) refers to both awakening from the sleep of ignorance and increasing wisdom in the knowable. For the two below Arhats, there is awakening from the sleep of afflictive ignorance, so the sound of Buddha emphasizes application. Some people (2) say that the sound of (Sanskrit, तथा बुद्ध, tathā buddha, Tathagata Buddha) applies to all three, which is a good explanation. (Sanskrit, तथा, tathā, thus) is thus, (Sanskrit, बुद्ध, buddha, awakened one) is understanding. As it appears, if enlightenment of Suchness is taken as the meaning of the sound of Buddha, then this meaning is present in all three. Therefore, the sound of enlightenment of Suchness can also be called Pratyekabuddha, saying that,
