Since it is established as you conventionally posit it, even if one considers those two to be one, when this teacher analyzes with reason, that self that you consider is not the self that is the object of innate grasping, because it does not exist even in name, and because it is not the agent and the experiencer of results. With these reasons, he refutes that the two are one, and asserts that the innate self exists in name, while the imputed self does not exist even in name. Similarly, the self that is accepted by the Samkhya school, based on slight differences in the characteristics of that self, causes the tenets of the non-Buddhists to become different. The Vaisheshika school says that the self possesses nine qualities: intelligence, pleasure, pain, desire, hatred, effort, dharma, non-dharma, and the force of action. As long as those initial qualities are combined with and exist in the self, one transmigrates in samsara because of performing virtuous and non-virtuous actions through their combination. When a person, through the knowledge of correct realization, completely severs the qualities, one abides in one's own nature and becomes liberated. The distinctions of that self, such as permanence and substantiality, are the same as before, the difference being that it is considered to be the agent and to possess qualities. Some within the Vaisheshika school assert that it possesses actions such as stretching and contracting. Those who speak of the Vedas assert that, like the space of pots and so on, the various bodies are different, but in reality, it is a single, diverse thing. The second part has three: refuting the essence, difference, and other designations with reasons; refuting that the self is other than the aggregates with the reason of non-apprehension; refuting the object of self-grasping and showing the conclusion. The first part has two: refuting the essence, and refuting the difference. The first part is: like the vulva and so on, taking the previously explained imputed self as the subject, in order to refute that it is truly existent, that it is the basis of innate self-grasping, and that it exists in name, the reason of unoriginatedness, which is known to the non-Buddhists themselves, is established. The second part is: because of what and so on, the way of establishing the difference is the same as before. The second part is: therefore and so on. The third part is: the world and so on. The second part, the self and the aggregates are one.

There are two parts to refuting the existence of self: stating the opponent's view and explaining the refutation. The first part is, regarding the aggregates, etc.: Those who are revered by many in their own school, according to the reasons they state, because a self different from the aggregates is not established, therefore, the object of the view of the perishable collection (འཇིག་ཚོགས་ལ་ལྟ་བ།) is only the aggregates. Therefore, they believe that the self is only the aggregates, and that the object of the view of the perishable and the self are the same in meaning, which is the same for all who believe in a substantially existent self. But in the school that believes in a nominally existent self, the Svatantrika and below believe that the two are not the same in meaning, because the object of the view of the perishable is the aggregates, but they do not believe that the aggregates are the self. The Prasangika believes that the two are the same in meaning, because neither of those two aggregates is the self, but relying on the aggregates, the object of grasping "I" at will is only that "I", and they believe that is those two. Therefore, although all those who are revered by many agree that the self is substantially existent, there are three different views on the definition and recognition of the self: Some believe that all five aggregates are the self, for example, the Bhagavan (བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས།) said: "Monks, whatever Shramana or Brahmin correctly observes 'there is a self', they only correctly observe these five aggregates of clinging." Therefore, in order to clarify that this view is aimed at the collection of perishable nature, and not at the self or what belongs to the self, it is said that the view related to the self and what belongs to the self is called the view of the perishable collection. Others believe that the mind is the self, because there is this verse: "Oneself is one's own protector, who else can be the protector? By taming oneself well, the wise can attain high position." From this verse, the mind is called the self. Where does this come from? Because there is no self different from the aggregates, and other sutras also say to tame the mind, because "taming the mind is good, taming the mind brings happiness", that's what the commentary says. Its meaning is that because the self is substantially existent and not different from the aggregates, the aggregates themselves are established as the self. Moreover, the taming of the self and the taming of the mind mentioned therein seem to have the same meaning, so the mind itself is the self.
