Refutation from the reason. Even without an established reason, refuting what is established. The first is, if so on. The second has four: refuting self-awareness's own nature, refuting the reason for establishing self-awareness—memory, in one's own side, memory and experience are reasonable, summarizing and showing the refutation of the other side. The first is, that itself and so on. The second is, if so on, here, if self-awareness is established by the reason of memory, then is memory established as a substance, or is it established by nominal memory? If according to the former, examining the four extremes of arising, memory is not established as a substance, therefore, it will not become a reason for self-awareness. If according to the latter, establishing self-awareness is not pervasive, such as on other bases, if other fire is previously established by valid cognition, then later from the reason of smoke, it is reasonable that it is not established on some bases. If previously self-awareness in general is established by valid cognition, it is reasonable to establish it from the reason of memory, but in the view of the later opponent, self-awareness in general was not previously established from the general characteristic, therefore it is not established now by the reason of memory, and the example of the reason of nominal memory establishing self-awareness not being pervasive is, just seeing water, one cannot establish a mani water crystal, or just seeing fire, one cannot establish a mani fire crystal, so it is said. Its meaning is, if it is nominal memory, then it is not pervasive because it arises from self-awareness, because even without self-experience, nominal memory can arise from experiencing objects. For example, even without a water crystal, there will be rain and so on, even without a fire crystal, water and fire will arise from rubbing wood and so on, the meaning is, this example is not not admitting that self-awareness is nominal, otherwise, establishing nominal self-awareness, using nominal memory as a reason, it would be necessary to say that it is pervasively contradictory, but it is said to be non-pervasive. It can also be known from the example, it is possible for water and fire to arise from water crystals and fire crystals, but if it is water and fire, it is not produced from those two, it is established as a non-pervasive example. The key point is, if establishing the to-be-established self-awareness, establishing memory as a substance, it is not established, establishing nominal memory, then it is not definite, this is an examination of the reason for establishment. Not understanding that meaning, thinking that by the reason of memory, self-awareness is established as a substance, and that both nominal self-awareness are not established, this is completely not understanding the meaning of the explanation. The later verse refutes

Regarding the view that cause and effect are different entities, it is unreasonable for memory to recall an object that has been experienced. If it is argued that it is reasonable because it belongs to the same continuum and the entities of cause and effect exist, it is still refuted by the reason "because it is a different entity," which has been explained in detail. Third, because of what, etc. In the commentary, it says: How is the knowledge that experiences the object, that is, the knowledge that experiences the object, not a different entity from the knowledge of memory? This has already been said. Because memory itself is not existent, therefore, what is experienced by what is experienced is not what is experienced by the knowledge of memory, therefore memory will be connected with the object. What is completely determined by the knowledge of experience is not what is not completely determined by memory, therefore it will also be said, "I saw it." The meaning of this passage is: Experience and memory are cause and effect, therefore they are not different entities, which has already been said. Because they are not different entities, the object experienced by experiencing the object, such as blue, is also not what is not experienced by later memory, therefore, from the sign of object memory, object experience can be established. The knowledge that is completely determined by the knowledge of experiencing blue is also not what is not completely determined by later memory, therefore it will be said, "I saw it," that is, from the sign of object-possessing memory, self-experience can be established. Therefore, this treatise, through the reason that experience and memory are not different entities, establishes that object memory arises from object experience, and self-memory arises from self-experience, and that memory acknowledges self-awareness in conventional truth. Otherwise, it is necessary to clearly explain the difference between "what is experienced by what is experienced" and "what is determined by the knowledge of experience." Here, some people, taking the reason that the object of experience and the object of memory are not different entities, consider the two to be the same entity, which is a mistake, because if that were the case, it would also apply to memory and experience. This teacher believes that the ālaya-vijñāna, klesha-manas, and self-awareness, etc., are spoken of in the scriptural authority, and that the conventional self-aspects that do not differentiate between truly existent or non-existent are acknowledged in conventional truth, and that analyzing and refuting these is done from the perspective of ultimate truth. Some people think that the Root Wisdom Treatise, the Refutation of Disputes, and the Clear Words Treatise, etc.
