Even though there are no objects of sense such as form and sound in sleep, because there is mental consciousness, it is established that even in the waking state, although there is no object, there is consciousness with an object, which is the view of Vijnanavada. The second point has three parts: the objects and consciousness of dreams are not true; the objects and consciousness of waking are not true; therefore, it shows that existence and non-existence are the same. The first point is: How, etc. In explaining the meaning of "ear, etc.," it is said: From the consciousness of sound and ear, to the realm of mind and dharma, and to the consciousness of mind. It is said that in this system, all eighteen elements of dreams are deceptive conventional truths that are reversed in relation to the world, so they are the same as not existing even in worldly terms. If one says to the Madhyamikas that even though there is no object in the waking state, there is consciousness with an object, using dreams as an example, then the Madhyamikas must admit that in the state of dreams there is no object but there is consciousness with an object, but since they do not admit it, it is unreasonable. Some people, not understanding this point, think that although the three dharmas (i.e., root, object, and consciousness) of the four (senses) from ear to body do not exist, they appear as their false aspects; the three dharmas of mind exist in dreams, but in reality they do not exist, but they appear to exist, so they are false. Therefore, if one assumes that sensory consciousness exists in dreams according to this teacher's view and refutes it, then this is a very crude application of intelligence, like the sun of refutation rising in the darkness before dawn, so it should be discarded far away. To this, Bhagavan Gotra Rala said: It is true that it is crude to say that sensory consciousness exists in dreams and to refute it according to this teacher's view, because the three dharmas of sensory consciousness in dreams are deceptive conventional truths, so they do not exist in worldly terms. Even more than that, your application of intelligence is crude, because this teacher said: That, in relation to consciousness, both are true; in relation to clearly seeing the meaning, both are false. You did not understand that you should apply that statement to: That, in relation to consciousness, all eighteen elements are true; in relation to clearly seeing the meaning, all eighteen elements are false. Followers, do not wear sheepskin hats, think carefully. Therefore, according to this teacher's view, the mental consciousness of dreams exists in name only, no matter how loud the shouting is,

Alas, the Wa language came out spontaneously. Furthermore, this logician 35 says in the commentary: Whatever form belongs to the dharma-dhātu, which is to be apprehended by the consciousness of the mind, exists in a dream. Therefore, the thought that consciousness cannot exist anywhere without an object is also unreasonable, because in a dream, these three are impossible in every way. Regarding the meaning of what was said, the teacher Legden refuted the previous example as not being established, saying that the form in the dream is clearly accepted as being established by Legden's own nature. Therefore, that should be taken as the reason for its non-existence. To say this is because he was afraid of contradicting himself by admitting that the form in the dream exists nominally, so he excessively slandered the Indian Paṇḍita. Even those who grasp the form of an elephant in a dream, and all ordinary things, as being true, call it untrue. Therefore, Legden would be even more foolish than them. Therefore, the meaning of that passage is that the teacher Legden answered the Vijñānavāda from the perspective that both the object and consciousness in the dream exist equally nominally, but this teacher thinks that it is not like that, because all three of the object, sense, and consciousness in the dream are equally non-existent nominally. That is to say, it should be understood by understanding the meaning of the sentence, "These are even more non-existent than the world." Also, this logician 36 says: Then, are the clear forms that appear in dreams in our own system accepted as forms belonging to the dharma-dhātu, or not? Because there is no sense consciousness in dreams, all the five objects that appear are only appearing to the mind consciousness, so the five dhātus such as the rūpa-dhātu cannot be established on that, but like a skeleton that appears clearly in the mind, it can be established as the dharma-dhātu, so it is the form of the dharma-dhātu. Moreover, that is also the form of the parikalpita arising from its five forms. This one says that many such examples should be understood. That also, It depends on the mind, both are true. When the meaning is clear, both are false. This very sentence can destroy it, because it will become: It depends on the mind, it is the rūpa-dhātu. When the meaning is clear, it is the dharma-dhātu.
