It is indicated by examples. First, because, etc. Ultimately, other-birth does not exist, but conventionally, other-birth must be accepted. This is to raise doubts in the previous branch and then answer in a conclusive way. This should not be applied to the Svatantrika either, because it is the occasion to prevent the self-nature birth of things. Second, that itself, etc. In the commentary, it says: Therefore, birth by one's own nature does not exist in either of the two truths. Saying this must also be applied to one of the earlier proponents, because the reason for preventing birth in the ultimate sense can prevent the birth established by one's own nature in the conventional sense. Third, things, etc. If there is no birth by one's own nature in both of the two truths, then how does it appear as form, etc.? This is answered by way of example. Third, truth, etc. In the Madhyamaka, it says: Those that exist by their own nature, since they are not non-existent, are permanent. Saying that what existed before does not exist now, therefore, it would be an extreme of annihilation. And, if things are admitted to exist, then the view of permanence and annihilation will be an extreme, because that thing is permanent and impermanent. The merit of abandoning the view of permanence and annihilation, as stated, is that it exists in the aspect of having no self-nature in either of the two truths. Second, the merit of the reasonableness of karmic results has three aspects: even without the ālaya, karmic results are not wasted; dispelling the two extremes regarding this; showing that the stated ālaya, etc., are provisional meanings. The first has two aspects: the actual meaning and the explanation of its example. First, because, etc. This has three aspects: how the connection of karmic results is reasonable, combining this with scripture, and refuting new misconceptions. First, since there is no self-nature in either of the two truths, it is not only abandoning the view of permanence and annihilation, but even if the basis of the karmic result connection examined by things is not accepted, the merit of the reasonable existence of the connection with the results of the karmas, even after the karma has ceased for a long time, also exists. How is it? This has two ways of raising doubts and answering them. First, in the Root Wisdom, it says: If it remains until the time of ripening, then that karma will become permanent. If it ceases, then it ceases.

Therefore, it is said, "How will it produce fruit?" It means that if karma remains until it is completed and produces fruit, then karma becomes permanent. If it ceases in the second moment, then from that boundary until the production of fruit, karma is completely non-existent, how will the fruit of karma be produced? That is (the meaning of this question). Second, in the Root Wisdom, first, the Realists who believe that the basis of karmic results is the continuum of consciousness and believe in "non-loss" are described, and then it is refuted, thereby establishing the order of one's own system, which is threefold. In this treatise, the Alaya consciousness is refuted at the root, and then one's own system is established. In the commentary, the Alaya consciousness, "non-loss," attainment, and the continuum of consciousness are refuted, and then one's own system is established. Among them, regarding the meaning of the cessation of karma, the Realists believe that karma ceases by its own nature, and their meaning is that the karma to be refuted is completely non-existent from then on, whether applied to a moment or a continuum, it is the same. In this way, after karma has ceased and until the production of fruit, a long gap occurs where karma is completely non-existent. In order to connect this gap, the Mind-Only school believes in the habit left by karma, and believes that its basis—the Alaya consciousness—is a permanent and truly existent entity. Some Vaibhashikas believe in generating "non-loss" similar to a debt certificate of karma, and some believe that karma generates "attainment" and then connects through it. The Sutra school believes that the continuum of consciousness imbued with habits exists. The connector is habit, which is the same as the Mind-Only school, but its object of imbuing is different. The Middle Way school's own view is that if karma ceases by its own nature, then it is true to say so, but this is cessation in name only, not cessation by its own nature, so karma is not completely non-existent before the production of fruit. Therefore, even without the Alaya consciousness, etc., that connect the intermediate gap, it is reasonable for fruit to arise from karma. Then, in that intermediate stage, does the nature of karma itself exist? If it exists, it is not, because it would become permanent. In this treatise, it says, "Because when the cause disappears, the fruit is also seen." It means that at the time of the fruit, the cause has disappeared. It also says, "Because when the sprout arises, the seed does not disappear." It means that at the time of the fruit, the cause has not disappeared. It also says, "Because it does not cease by its own nature." It means that karma does not cease. Sometimes it is said that karma has ceased.
