This is because the aggregates, as the basis, have not refuted the object of clinging to be true. This indicates that if the object of clinging, which clings to the aggregates as the basis of designation, is not refuted, then the object of clinging, which clings to the person as the designated object, is also not refuted. Therefore, since the selflessness of the person is not realized, the characteristic of the selflessness of the person is not fully realized. The terms of whether the characteristic of the selflessness of the person is complete or not, and the basis to which it applies, will be refuted below. To make the aggregates the basis of designation and the person the designated object is the tenet of the Svātantrika school and below, but not the tenet of the Prāsaṅgika school. Because in this tenet, the aggregates are the cause of designating the person, the person is designated in dependence on the aggregates, the aggregates are to be taken, and the person is the taker, etc., are explained in detail by means of the example of the limbs of a chariot and the chariot itself. The commentary says: "The selflessness of the person will not be realized, because of focusing on the aggregates as the cause of designating the self." And, "At that time, the collection of its limbs is the chariot itself, like the chariot and the self." In the commentary to this verse, it says: "Just as on the collection of limbs, depending on which the name 'chariot' is spoken, so too, depending on the aggregates, conventionally it is called 'sentient being'." Taking this sutra as the source, similarly, the nature of the self, which is designated by taking the aggregates as the cause, should not be merely a collection of aggregates. And, "That itself has limbs, that is, has parts." In the commentary to this verse, it says: "Therein, the chariot becomes the possessor of limbs by depending on its own limbs such as the wheel spokes. The wheel spokes and so forth become the possessor of parts by depending on the parts. The wheel spokes and so forth, having been taken, become the agent by depending on the action of taking. Depending on its own taker, it becomes the taker." What is said in this way is to combine the self and the aggregates, but not to say that the self and the aggregates are the basis of designation and the designated object, which is completely invisible. There is also harm from reasoning, if the aggregates are the basis of designation of the person, then it must be admitted that the aggregates are the object of the self-grasping of the person, and this is also repeatedly refuted in this text. Therefore, Rongtön Sheja Kunrig said that this tenet initially takes the aggregates as the object.

Therefore, the thought of clinging to something without a basis as "I" is the innate ego-grasping, and therefore, its object is merely "I," which is considered to be the basis of designation for a person and the object of the innate view of the aggregates, which seems to be the view of the scriptures. The key point is: for all things and persons, separating the basis of designation and the designated thing is the system of considering the basis of designation as substantially existent and the designated thing as nominally existent. For example, the eight particles are substantially existent, and the pot is nominally designated. The Svatantrikas have lost their way in this regard, while the Prasangikas, if they need the terms "basis of designation" and "designated thing," acknowledge that it is its basis of designation. For example, a person is the basis of designation for a person, and a pot is the basis of designation for a pot. Otherwise, if it is necessary to separate the two, one must ultimately acknowledge a basis of designation that is not a designated thing, and thus one will fall from the tenets of the school. The way of establishing all things such as a chariot and its parts, a pot and its particles, a person and their aggregates, etc., is to establish them as merely imputed in dependence on terminology, and without seeking a way of establishing them ultimately. Do not destroy this supreme system, and please abide in speaking correctly. When cutting off doubts about these things, even if you have not found the view of suchness, you should ascertain the sixteen aspects of impermanence, etc., through valid cognition, and their disciples should diligently meditate on that meaning, and from meditation, directly see the coarse selflessness of persons, and after seeing it, familiarize themselves with it. We do not say that this is impossible. So, what is it? Because such a path does not fully realize the characteristics of the selflessness of persons, that path is not considered to be the path of seeing and the path of meditation that transcends the world. Therefore, it cannot abandon the seeds of either what is to be abandoned by seeing or what is to be abandoned by meditation, and although that path cannot abandon the seeds of afflictions, it can temporarily prevent the manifestation of afflictions. For example, the form of quiescence and insight that is common to outsiders can abandon the manifestation of afflictions up to nothingness, as stated in the Abhidharma. If it is necessary to think in this way, then what need is there to say that the previous path can temporarily abandon manifestation? The so-called abandoning the manifestation of afflictions,
