If someone asks, "In that case, will all the conventional designations disappear?" In response to this, the ancient masters seem to elaborate with reasons such as "There is no fault in not admitting a single opposite," but the key point is that if one analyzes with reason, admitting that the life of a cow is merely pervaded by dung, etc., then that is equally true. However, at that time, the cow itself cannot be found, so one does not admit that its life is merely pervaded by dung, etc., that is the meaning. Second, refuting through analysis: If it arises from another cause, does it arise from a cause that has ceased or has not ceased? If it is like the first case, it will become causeless, and if it is like the latter case, cause and effect will arise simultaneously. If one says that the effect arises without the cause ceasing, that is not said. However, if one thinks that the effect arises without the cause ceasing, but there is no effect at the time of arising, so it will not arise simultaneously, that is not correct. Because this arising, without an agent, is not the essence of reason either. In this way, if there is no effect when the cause has not ceased, then there is no action of arising, therefore the arising of the effect itself is unreasonable. Similarly, if it arises from another cause, does it arise after contact or without contact? If it is like the first case, cause and effect will arise simultaneously, and if it is like the latter case, there is no cause at the time of the effect's arising, therefore the effect will arise from a causeless cause. Furthermore, whether the existing effect arises or the non-existing effect arises when the cause exists, the refutation of arising from existence or non-existence, and the reasoning of analyzing one and many in both cause and effect should also be applied. Second, refuting other-arising in convention: Even in the face of unanalyzed worldly people, there is no arising from others. Because worldly people only see the effect arising from the cause, and do not see the cause and effect as different entities. Because, merely planting the seed as a cause, they point to the later son, thinking, "This is what I have produced"; merely planting the seed of a tree, they point to the later tree, thinking, "This is what I have planted." If someone asks, "Then, in worldly convention, will there be self-arising?" The answer is: There will be no self-arising. Because if asked, "Is the previous cause the same as this present one?" The answer is, "No, but relying on the previously planted seed and the planted tree, this present one arises."

Just for the sake of speaking and thinking for a moment. Precisely because of this, even in conventional terms, the reasoning of Chandrakirti, which denies that cause and effect are either the same or different, is so subtle that it is difficult to understand, but if understood, it seems to be of great significance. Now, there is something to examine here: In the Compendium of Trainings and the Clear Words, a sutra is quoted saying, "The world's birth is other, and its death is other," and in the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life, it says, "Thus, death is other, and birth is also other." If one thinks that this establishes that cause and effect are different in conventional terms, then here, "other" refers to giving the name "other" to something that is not one, but it is not the otherness that belongs to the category of the four extremes. Because the noble Nagarjuna believes that even in conventional terms, he does not accept the same and different that belong to the category of the four extremes. However, the Commentary on the Rice Seedling Sutra says, "Because for things that are not permanent, the seed is also other, and the sprout is also other. What is the seed is not the sprout; what is the sprout is not the seed." And in the Clear Words, quoting the Rice Seedling Sutra, it says, "Ignorance is also other, and formations are also other. What is ignorance is not formations; what are formations are not ignorance." And so on, connecting it all the way to old age and death. If one asks, how do we know that these are giving the name of otherness to things that are not one? Because as a way of knowing that the seed is also other and the sprout is also other, it is written, "What is the seed is not the sprout; what is the sprout is not the seed," from which it is known. If one were to accept otherness with the same reasoning, then the lotus in the sky and the son of a barren woman would also become other, which is unreasonable. For example, the Commentary on the Rice Seedling Sutra says, "The five causes, by external conditions, establish dependent arising." The five causes mentioned here refer to: not permanent, not annihilated, not transferred, not that a large result arises from a small cause, and that in the case of things belonging to a similar continuum, the seed and sprout are of different kinds in the case of non-transfer. Although similarity is spoken of in the case of belonging to a similar continuum, the meaning of different kinds refers to the fact that colors and shapes are different, so there is no contradiction. And in the Entering, it says: If your seed
