If we carefully examine my (Tsongkhapa's) system of valid cognition, first a vague understanding will arise, and then a clear and distinct ascertainment will arise. This is the wisdom of hearing and thinking that becomes the seed of a complete Buddha, so those who are fortunate should strive. Secondly, regarding the establishment of continuity, those of our own school who assert substantial existence believe that the nature of continuity is nominally imputed, but they believe that the basis of imputation is the prior and subsequent moments that are established by their own nature as different entities. The Svatantrikas believe that the basis of imputation is the prior and subsequent moments that are different in name only. In this regard, Master Chandrakirti said, "If this is the case, it would be unreasonable for continuity to be the same and for lineage to be the same, because they are different, just like the Dharma based on Maitreya and the Dharma based on Nears Hidden." After refuting this, (Master Chandrakirti believes that) although there is no arising or ceasing in ultimate truth, in conventional truth, the prior moment ceases and the subsequent moment appears to arise, and based on this uninterrupted arising, continuity is nominally imputed as the same and lineage is nominally imputed as the same. For example, the continuity of a river is broken or unbroken, and the continuous joining and non-joining of continuity, and the possession and non-possession of the continuity of the objects of the path, etc., can be seen in the world and in the scriptures. If the prior and subsequent moments are the same or different, then continuity is unreasonable, which can be established by the reasoning that prevents self-arising and other-arising even in nominal truth. If they are not different, then continuity is reasonable, which can be established by the reasoning that the prior and subsequent moments of the continuity of consciousness are not different. This is their view. How do we know this? The Root Wisdom says that for dependent origination, the eight extremes of elaboration, such as arising and ceasing, are refuted. Although other commentators explain by separately distinguishing between nominal truth and ultimate truth, this master (Master Chandrakirti) takes as his unique feature the refutation of the eight extremes of elaboration, such as arising and ceasing, in ultimate truth, and says that this is the main content of the treatise on dependent origination, which clearly shows that he admits arising and ceasing, etc., in nominal truth. For the four extremes of arising and the person composed of the five aggregates, etc., those things that should be refuted that are not admitted even in nominal truth, this master refutes well by adding the distinction of ultimate truth. Therefore, the commentary on "There is no cessation, there is no permanence" says, "Because of cessation, it is cessation."

Eh! Because it is said that "it means cessation," it is established that cessation is a term. Therefore, conversely, non-cessation must also be acknowledged as a term, because the two are established in mutual dependence. How so? For example, from a seed sprouts a shoot, and from a shoot again comes a seed, etc. Existing without interruption from beginningless time is called non-cessation. When a seed is burned by fire and cannot sprout a shoot, it is designated as cessation. As Gala Jigme said, non-cessation is like a seed and a shoot. This is in accordance with what is said in the Ratnavali: "Because one sees birth with causes, therefore it has passed beyond non-existence. Because one sees cessation with causes, therefore one does not accept it as existence either." If one thinks that even in terms of terminology itself, there is a contradiction in establishing the Middle Way that abandons permanence and annihilation, that is because, as shown by "Whatever exists by its own nature, because it is not non-existent, is permanent," etc., it is the permanence and annihilation posited by the proponents of inherent existence. The permanence and annihilation of the eight extremes are the permanence and annihilation in the sense of the truth of conventional reality, so the meanings are different. In short, the uninterrupted arising of the three, afflictions, karma, and fruition, is called the continuum of samsara. The uninterrupted arising of a Buddha from the practice of a bodhisattva, activities from that, and the practice of later bodhisattvas from that, etc., is called the continuum of activity, and so on, which is also asserted by the Madhyamikas. As Nagarjuna said: "From these three, two arise; from two, seven arise; and from seven also, three arise. That wheel of existence itself revolves again and again." And as Maitreya said: "Likewise, as long as this samsara exists, karma is regarded as uninterrupted." This is also because it is unreasonable according to the proponents of inherent existence that the previous moment ceases by its own nature and the later moment arises by its own nature. Therefore, it is reasonable only in dependent arising, where the previous moment itself does not become the later moment, and the later moment does not arise without relying on the previous moment. As Nagarjuna said: "Recitation, lamp, mirror, magnifying glass, crystal, seed, sour taste, and sound, also the connection of aggregates and rebirth, should be understood by the wise as not transferring." Thus, because it directly shows that the previous moment does not become the later moment, the other meaning is shown indirectly.
