It should be explained that all five aggregates are empty of their own nature by relying on wisdom. If an opponent who does not desire any one of these differs from this, then neither the ultimate truth nor the conventional truth can be explained. If mind and mental factors exist, then pots and cloths, etc., also exist, because they are known throughout the world. If pots and cloths, etc., do not exist when analyzed, then mind and mental factors will also not exist, because both are devoid of reason. Thus it is said. If so, that is not the same. The meaning of the noble one's equipoise is that the ultimate truth's terms are not established because the proliferation of existence and non-existence is pacified. Since the conventional is an illusion, the ultimate truth does not change in its object, so there is a fault of not establishing the ultimate truth. And there is also a fault of not establishing the conventional. Does the ignorance of ordinary beings establish that the conventional is conventional, or does it not? If it is not established, then no one establishes that the conventional is conventional. Because the noble one, according to you, does not have the conventional, it is not established. And it is not established by ordinary beings either. If it is established, then the ignorance of ordinary beings establishes that the conventional is false, deceptive, and like an illusion. Because it establishes that the conventional is conventional. This is pervasive. Because the sutra quoted in the Clear Words says: These are things that deceive. These are false illusions that deceive children. Thus it is said. Third, some later Madhyamikas believe that, according to the Prasangika school, in conventional terms, pots and cloths, etc., must be accepted as neither existent nor non-existent. The reason is: Neither existent nor non-existent, neither both nor neither. Etc., are all the scriptures that negate the four extremes of proliferation. The reason is that if it exists, it will become permanent; if it does not exist, it will become annihilated. As stated in the Root Wisdom: 'To say "exists" is to see permanence. To say "does not exist" is to grasp annihilation. Therefore, the wise should not abide in existence and non-existence.' Thus it is said. They think so. Regarding this, there are two things: the proof is not valid, and there is harm. First, the scriptures that negate the four extremes of proliferation refer to the ultimate truth, not to the conventional truth. Because the ultimate truth is free from proliferation.

because of that, and because the conventional is with elaboration. The establishment of reasoning is also unreasonable, for if mere existence pervades permanence, then, the teacher Āryadeva said: For a while, whatever thing exists, it abides in the state of destruction. Because if a thing exists, it is pervaded by impermanence, which contradicts this, and if mere non-existence pervades annihilation, then the two selflessnesses will also be the fault of self-annihilation. Furthermore, the dependent arising of 'this exists, then this arises' is also unreasonable, because it is impossible for this to exist. Second, for the existence of harmful things, it is harmed by scripture, as the sutra says: The Blessed One disputes with the world, but I do not dispute with the world. Whatever the world considers to exist, I also consider to exist. Whatever the world considers not to exist, I also consider not to exist. This contradicts what was said, because the Teacher establishes the existence and non-existence in the world as nominal existence and non-existence. The harm of reasoning is that the term 'non-existent' is used when a perceptible phenomenon is not observed, and the term 'existent' is used when a perceptible phenomenon is observed. This term will not be consistent with the meaning of the world's terms, because it does not accept either existence or non-existence in terms of terms. If those are the terms of the world, but the Madhyamika does not accept them, then it contradicts the previous sutra, and if the world does not harm you, then you should rely on the world to refute this, which will also be self-contradictory. Contradicting fame is that when someone from outside asks a Madhyamika Prasangika, 'Is there fire? Is there water?' When asked, they are seen to say 'If it exists, it exists,' and 'If it does not exist, it does not exist.' They are not seen to say that fire and water neither exist nor do not exist. Even if they say it, it will become a word of contention, and no common meaning will be established in the world. Fourth, some later Madhyamikas say that if one exclusionary negation is negated, then the other will be established by pervasive determination. Therefore, in both truths, existence and non-existence, non-existence and non-non-existence, are impossible on the same basis. Therefore, 'This is Devadatta, this is a sacrificial offering,' and so on for persons, and 'This is Devadatta's ear,' and so on, all terms of phenomena are merely established by name.
