The external objects that are established from the perspective of their own mode of existence, without dependence, are actually asserted. This is not reasonable, because they are established in dependence on the minds of the subject and on each other. The Sautrāntikas assert that consciousness knows external objects by means of the aspects that the objects themselves impart, and that the external objects that impart these aspects exist in a hidden manner. This is also unreasonable, because there is nothing that harms the fact that things like fire are real, and there is no proof that the consciousness that results from them is real. The Yogācārins assert, "Appearances are true, objects are not real, only the mind is," and so on, based on scripture and reasoning, or on the reasoning that "it is a manifestation," asserting that what appears as an object to sense consciousness is consciousness, and that this appearance is due to the power of habit, without any external object that imparts it. This is unreasonable, because the scriptures need to be interpreted, and if "knower" and "manifestor" are used as reasons, they are uncertain; if "the knower" and "the manifestor" are used as reasons, they are unestablished; and it appears as the nature of external objects, not as the nature of pleasure or pain. The Vijñānavādins assert, "Seeing external objects is mistaken," and "Since objects appear even though they do not exist," and so on, based on scripture and reasoning, asserting that consciousness looks outward and appears as an object, but is neither object nor consciousness, and is therefore a confused appearance, like seeing hairs by someone with cataracts. This is also unreasonable, because just as pleasure, pain, and so on are considered real because they serve a purpose, fire and water are also seen to serve the purpose of heat and cold, and therefore must also be admitted to be real. Just as external objects cannot be found when analyzed as one or many, consciousness cannot be found when analyzed by segments of time. Thus, those who assert reality are like climbing a tree to get fruit, and if they let go of the previous branch without grabbing the next one, they will not get the fruit and will fall into a great abyss. They abandon the conventional reality that even cowherds know, and cling to the self and phenomena as something else, so they do not grasp the ultimate reality either, and fall into the ravine of wrong views, losing both truths and failing to obtain the result. This is what the teacher Candrakīrti said. Second, there are four points to refute other schools that claim to be Madhyamikas: They assert that all conventional truths are the views of ordinary people.

Refutation of Tenets. Refutation of establishing the two truths in the respective systems of arising and noble beings. Refutation of establishing conventional truth as neither existent nor nonexistent. Refutation of the existence of designation without a designated object. First: Some who pretend to be Madhyamikas claim that Madhyamikas have no self-established tenets, because Madhyamikas are noble beings, and Madhyamika is their meditative equipoise, so in the face of their meditative equipoise, all elaborations are pacified. Therefore, all the presentations of ground, path, and fruit presented in this text are merely presentations of worldly customs. As it says in the Four Hundred: "Just as a foreign language cannot be understood, likewise, the world cannot be understood except by worldly people." And in the Entering the Middle Way: "In the face of the world, I speak thus." And in the commentary on Entering the Middle Way: "Although it is not existent, it is said to be existent because it is only renowned in the world, so it is said only in the face of the world, and saying it afterwards is a means of refuting it." As it is said: "The Bhagavan argues with the world, but I do not argue with the world. Whatever the world considers to exist, I also consider to exist. Whatever the world considers not to exist, I also consider not to exist." And again in the same text: "Through the door of dependence on others, I establish conventional truth, but not as independent." And: "Conventional things, like water in a mirage, are established only by the worldly reversed clinging, and only by establishing this as a condition, not by others." And in the commentary on the Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning: "In the power of the conceptualization of childish beings, there are two: samsara and nirvana." Thus they believe. To this, one asks, what is the meaning of "worldly people"? To this, some say that those who speak of reality, transformed by tenets, have fallen from both truths, so "the world" refers to ordinary worldly people who have never entered any tenet system, so the common knowledge of those people is presented in this text. If that is the case, then the ten grounds of bodhicitta and so forth, the paths and fruits of the three vehicles, and the kayas, wisdoms, and activities, etc., spoken of in this text, will become without a basis.
