From the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way: The four extremes, such as permanence and impermanence, where are they in peace? The four extremes, such as beginning and endlessness, where are they in peace? And from the Essence of Wisdom, Collected from All: Not existent, not nonexistent, not both existent and nonexistent, not even the nature of both, the Madhyamika who is liberated from the four extremes, is the very truth for the wise. Thus it is said. Here, establishing subtle and coarse objects to be refuted, the former is easy to refute, and if not refuted, it becomes the cause of the suffering of samsara; the latter is difficult to refute, and if not refuted, it obstructs the Bodhi of the Great Vehicle, but does not obstruct merely the peace of Nirvana that has abandoned the suffering of samsara. Secondly, there are three Madhyamikas that lead to the attainment of the Bodhi of the Hearers, the Solitary Realizers, and the Great Vehicle. The first is: To attain the Bodhi of the Hearers, one must abandon the actions and afflictions included in samsara, and to abandon them, one must abandon the innate self-grasping that is their cause. In that, when the object of attachment, the mere 'I', is sought in seven ways, one must realize the selflessness of the person who is not found, and the selflessness of phenomena, in which the aggregates, the cause of imputation to the person, are sought and not found. As it is said in the Praise of the Dharmadhatu: Because of grasping at 'I' and 'mine', as long as there are discriminations of external objects, when the two kinds of selflessness are seen, the seed of existence will cease. And in the Root Wisdom it is said: By the exhaustion of actions and afflictions, there is liberation; actions and afflictions arise from discrimination; their proliferation arises from proliferation; they are ceased by emptiness. And it is said: If ignorance ceases, then actions and so forth will not arise; ignorance ceases by cultivating that with wisdom. Thus it is said. By refuting such two selves, one is liberated from the extreme of permanence. In conventional truth, by abandoning the ten non-virtues and not abandoning the practice of engaging in the ten virtues, one is liberated from the extreme of annihilation, therefore it is the Middle Way. The second is: To attain the Bodhi of the Solitary Realizers, in addition to the two selflessnesses mentioned earlier, by realizing that the apprehended external objects such as forms, and the apprehended internal objects such as afflictions and purifications, are without inherent existence, one is liberated from the extreme of permanence. In conventional truth, by not abandoning the practice of pleasing the Buddhas for a hundred eons, one is liberated from the extreme of annihilation.

Because elaborations do not require Madhyamaka. As it is said in the Ornament for Clear Realization, "In order to abandon the understanding of the object of grasping, and also in order not to abandon grasping, the path that relies on something like a rhinoceros horn, should be known as the correct summary." It is said that the understanding of the object of grasping is also explained as grasping the external object as true in the aspect of the second path, and as manifestly clinging to the object of grasping of complete defilement, etc., in the aspect of the third path. Third, in order to attain unsurpassed enlightenment, on top of the selflessnesses mentioned earlier, by blocking all extremes of elaboration, one is liberated from the extreme of permanence. In the relative, one does not abandon the vast conduct of generosity, etc., and is liberated from the extreme of annihilation, therefore Madhyamaka is necessary. As it is said in the Precious Garland, "Whoever wishes to quickly attain the enlightenment of self and others, the root of that is bodhicitta, as stable as the king of mountains, and compassion that reaches all directions, and wisdom that does not rely on the two extremes." This is because it is said. This way of distinguishing is because the tenets of substantialists cannot attain enlightenment in either the Great or Small Vehicle, so all the enlightenment of the three vehicles must be attained through this Madhyamaka path, in order to understand this. Third, there are three ways of establishing Madhyamaka: establishing mere relative appearance as Madhyamaka, establishing ultimate reality as free from elaboration as Madhyamaka, and establishing the union of the two truths as Madhyamaka. First, these causes and effects of mere relative appearance, such as when observing the sprout as the fruit, the cause, like the seed, is not cut off, so it is liberated from the extreme of annihilation. At the time of the sprout, the seed does not exist, so it is liberated from the extreme of permanence, therefore it is Madhyamaka. As it is said in the Root Wisdom, "That which arises in dependence on something, is not exactly that, nor is it different from that, therefore it is neither annihilation nor permanence." And in the Precious Garland, "Seeing that it arises with a cause, it has transcended non-existence, seeing that it ceases with a cause, it also does not accept it as truly existent." And in the Entrance to its Meaning, "Because the sprout is not different from the seed, therefore the seed does not perish at the time of the sprout, because oneness is not existent, therefore also, it is not said that the seed exists at the time of the sprout." This is the way of establishing cause and effect, which is the conceptualization of
