From the aspect of gathering, (it is said in the scriptures:) "Quickly attain the enlightenment of the Victorious One, who is not overwhelmed by fierce power." Therefore, it is said this way. Third, like a wish-fulfilling jewel, which is rare and greatly beneficial, without any conceptual thought. The Buddha, who is the fruition of the Middle Way, perfect in both benefits, is also extremely rare to appear in the world. If he does appear, he greatly benefits all, and he also has no conceptual thought. As it is said in the Uttaratantra: "Because the source of arising is rare, because it is stainless, because it possesses power, and because it becomes the ornament of the world, therefore it is supreme." And as it is said in the Compendium of The Great Vehicle: "Just like a wish-fulfilling jewel, without conceptualization, it arises naturally. Likewise, the activities of the Buddha, without conceptualization, arise naturally." Therefore, it is said this way. Third, the classification of what is to be said and what can be said has two aspects: the classification of the Middle Way that is to be said and the classification of the Middle Way practitioners who can say it. The first has two aspects: the basis upon which it is classified and the nature of what is classified. The first is that, in general, the four schools of Buddhist philosophy all consider their respective schools to be the Middle Way that avoids permanence and annihilation, and they all agree that relying on it, one can attain the three enlightenments. Therefore, the Realist school does not call the Middle Way the Middle Way, but calls it the school of No Self-Nature. Among them, the Realist school avoids permanence and annihilation in two ways: the way of avoiding permanence and annihilation in terms of actions and results, and the way of avoiding permanence and annihilation in terms of the totality of knowable objects. The first will be explained below in the context of conventional truth. The latter, the Vaibhashika school, believes that the ultimate truth, which is encompassed by the five aggregates of knowable objects, is truly established, and therefore it is liberated from the extreme of annihilation. The conventional truth, which is encompassed by the person who is imputed upon the five aggregates and the phenomena that are established on the basis of grossness and continuity, is not truly established, and therefore it is liberated from the extreme of permanence. The Sautrantika school believes that among the five aggregates of knowable objects, the appearance of form, the primary mind, and the three bases of the surrounding mental factors are truly established in the ultimate sense, and therefore they are liberated from the extreme of annihilation. The non-associated compositional factors and the two bases of the unconditioned, as well as the person and phenomena mentioned earlier, are not truly established, and therefore they are believed to be liberated from the extreme of permanence. The Mind-Only school believes that the nature of phenomena, the perfectly established, and its basis, the other-powered, are established by their own characteristics, and therefore they are liberated from the extreme of annihilation. The other-powered, taken by the power of habitual tendencies,

It is believed that the self of phenomena, which appears as dualistic grasping, and the person imputed upon the aggregates are not truly existent, thus liberating from the extreme of permanence. The Madhyamikas believe that those who assert things as real, no matter how much they abandon permanence and annihilation, do not transcend grasping onto the extremes of permanence and annihilation. Because they assert that things are established by their own nature, they do not liberate from the extreme of permanence. Because things that previously existed by their own nature later become completely nonexistent, they do not liberate from the extreme of annihilation. This is asserted as such. In the Root Wisdom, it is said, "If things had intrinsic existence, they would be permanent because they are not nonexistent. To say that something existed before but does not exist now, would entail annihilation." Therefore, although there are many ways to abandon permanence and annihilation that are uncommon to those who assert things as real, the main one is as stated in the Refutation of Objections: "He who taught that emptiness and dependent arising are one in meaning on the Middle Way, the supreme speaker, the incomparable one, to that Buddha I pay homage." As it is said, merely by dependent arising, one is liberated from both extremes of permanence and annihilation, thus it is established as the Middle Way. Even if it is established as the Middle Way, because it does not transcend the extremes, it is not established in any extreme. This is the basis of distinction here. Secondly, the nature of what is distinguished is divided into six aspects: from the perspective of the object to be negated and the manner of negation, from the perspective of the vehicle to be traversed, from the perspective of the two truths, from the perspective of the consciousness possessing an object, from the perspective of what is expressed and the means of expression, and from the perspective of the conditions of the person. The first of these is divided into the Madhyamaka that negates the coarse object to be negated and the Madhyamaka that negates the subtle object to be negated. The first is that, by means of reasoning such as the diamond slivers and the freedom from one and many, the appearance of true establishment is negated, thereby liberating from the extreme of permanence. In the face of an unexamined and unanalyzed mind, the mere appearance of cause and effect, etc., is established conventionally, thereby liberating from the extreme of annihilation. As it is said in the Precious Garland, "Those who are nonexistent go to bad destinies, those who are existent go to good destinies, by fully knowing reality as it is, one does not rely on either and attains liberation." Thus it is said. The second is that, having negated truth in this way, the latter three extremes of non-truth, both, and neither, and even attachment to the mere imputation of phenomena that are empty of truth, are negated. Therefore, because it is free from all extremes, it is Madhyamaka.
