The method of generating tranquility is as follows: In the Ornament for Clear Realization, it is explained that after attaining tranquility, the method of cultivating it based on the eleven mental engagements refers to the practice of Samadhi in the continuum of Dharma through the union of tranquility and insight. If one only cultivates the essence of tranquility, abandoning the nine afflictions of the desire realm, both great and small, through the six mental engagements, and achieves the essence of tranquility, then tranquility will become even more excellent than before. This is because the continuum will increase with bliss, will not be stained by the faults of sin and affliction, and will have great power to accomplish activities. Having thus achieved tranquility, the third step is to cultivate wisdom and insight. This involves two aspects: the method of cultivation and the action of habituation. First, within the method of cultivation, there are three approaches: entering all at once, entering gradually, and condensing the essential points of the instructions for cultivation. The first approach involves examining any individual or phenomenon with the reasoning previously explained, making it impossible to find. Then, using the same reasoning, examine all other appearing objects, making them impossible to find as well. After that, in this state, abandoning the faults of Samadhi and abiding, one will be able to abide for as long as desired due to the power of the previous tranquility. This is the union of tranquility and insight. For this practice, it is necessary to understand the key point of applying the reasoning that establishes the selflessness of phenomena to individuals, and applying the reasoning that establishes the selflessness of individuals to phenomena. This has already been explained in the chapter on the Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way. In this snowy land, even if one has not found the certainty established by hearing and thinking about what came before, to say that meditating on a jumble of thoughts is the view of Hwashang, and to say that counting the rosary of thoughts of "no self, no self" that came later is meditation, is the dregs of the view. It has already been refuted elsewhere, and should be remembered. The second approach is to first use the reasoning that establishes the selflessness of the individual to make the "self" of the individual impossible to find, and then abide in that state. Then, using the reasoning of applying the six together, make external objects impossible to find, and then abide in that state. Then, if there is no object of grasping, the grasper cannot be found either, so abide in that state. Then, the non-dual consciousness should also be made free from the elaboration of the four extremes, and then abide in that state. The third approach is to transform all appearances into mind using the example of dreams. Then, using the example of illusion, show all appearances as illusion.

Then, as in the example, "Recitation is like a lamp, a mirror, a crystal; the seed of fire, sourness, and sound; the combination of aggregates and continuity; the wise understand that it does not change," illusion can also be established as dependent origination. Knowing that dependent origination is also inexpressible, by abiding in this state, all the afflictions included in the path of seeing can be abandoned, and uncontaminated wisdom will arise. With the wisdom of hearing, a thought contrary to afflictions arises; with thinking, afflictions are destroyed; with worldly meditation, afflictions are suppressed; and with transcendental meditation, afflictions are eradicated from the root. This is the difference in the order of what is to be abandoned and the antidote. Third, there are seven practices for accomplishing the two accumulations: the practice of relying on a virtuous friend, the practice of dwelling in a solitary place, the practice of partaking of alms, the practice of bodily purity, the practice of illness, the practice of death, and the practice of virtuous conduct. First, possessing perfect discipline and so on, possessing the qualities of learning and contemplation, guarding the Dharma of a renunciate, possessing the two kinds of restraint, and abiding in the noble lineage—these are the five. Second, thinking about why I have come to this solitary place, not creating the faults of future physical and mental distractions, striving in yoga to accomplish the future meaning, constantly thinking before the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, thereby preventing misdeeds, and not fearing the fear of humans and non-humans—these are the five. Third, protecting the body from adverse conditions, not engaging in the karma of afflictive misdeeds for the sake of alms, being content and easily satisfied, subduing pride and tolerating wrongdoings, and using what is given with faith in a meaningful way—these are the five. Fourth, possessing food, clothing, sleep, guarding modesty, and harmonizing the elements—these are the five. Fifth, visualizing the body as a deity, reciting mantras, treating harm-doers with love and compassion, knowing that illness is the result of bad karma, and based on this, practicing the exchange of self and others—these are the five. Sixth, the pith instructions for the transference of consciousness in the Great Vehicle are: the five powers themselves are the essence of practice.
