Thus, one should train in the body of a deity. Secondly, there are two aspects: śamatha (calm abiding) and vipaśyanā (insight). The first has three parts: preparation, main practice, and conclusion. The preparation is as follows: Having generated bodhicitta (the mind of enlightenment), perform the seven-branch practice, such as prostrations and offerings to the Three Jewels and the guru. Then, make fervent prayers and sit in the manner of the Teacher sitting under the Bodhi tree. Then, the main practice is as follows: With joy in the benefits of samādhi (meditative concentration), stabilize the object of focus. One needs a method to keep the mind one-pointedly on it. As it says in the sutra: "Place the mind, continuously place, definitely place, closely place, tame, pacify, closely pacify, make it a single stream, make it equanimously placed." Thus, it is taught that one abides with the nine methods of abiding the mind. The first, placing the mind, is: During the day, focus the two, eye consciousness and mind consciousness, one-pointedly on the object of focus, and meditate with a clear appearance. At night, through mindfulness of the object of focus, exert effort and abide one-pointedly. The second, continuously placing, is: Maintaining the continuity of the previous object of focus. The third, definitely placing, is: If awareness wanders outward, then thinking, "My awareness has become wild," quickly recollect awareness, quickly take it back and place the mind. The fourth, closely placing, is: If the mind becomes weary with one object of focus, then meditate for a short time, such as one session each, on a yellow flower or the crown of a deity, to refresh oneself. Then, again meditate on the previous object. The fifth, taming, is: Knowing that samādhi has immeasurable qualities, in all activities, even if the object of focus is not clear, always remember the aspect of the object, and thereby tame the mind. The sixth, pacifying, is: When discursive thoughts arise, if one becomes displeased, then release the mind onto the object of focus and pacify it. The seventh, closely pacifying, is: When unwholesome thoughts such as greed arise, rely on the object of focus and pacify them. The eighth, making it a single stream, is: If the mind abides without wandering outward, then keep it one-pointedly on that. The ninth, extremely equanimously placing, is: After those objects of focus are stable, samādhi will arise even without deliberate effort. These are also in the sutras.

From the Ornament [for Clear Realization]: "Having fixed the mind on the object, do not let its continuity be distracted. Having quickly realized distraction, bring it back again to that. The wise should gather the mind inward, more and more. Then, in order to see the qualities, tame the mind in samadhi. In order to see the faults of distraction, pacify it with displeasure. Likewise, pacify the arising of covetousness, displeasure, and so forth. Then, the one who is diligent in discipline, with mental engagement on the mind, will attain spontaneous arising. From habituation, there is no engagement." Thus it is said. Therefore, it is also said that these are cultivated through relying on eight engagements that counteract the five faults: As an antidote to laziness, faith, aspiration, diligence, and pliancy; as an antidote to forgetting the instructions, mindfulness; as an antidote to sinking and excitement, awareness; as an antidote to non-engagement, mental engagement of the mind; when sinking and excitement are pacified, as an antidote to excessive effort, cultivating equanimity. When cultivating, the ninth is placement, and when the bliss of pliancy has not been attained, it is single-pointed desire, and when it has been attained, it is calm abiding gathered by the access of meditative absorption, and if one cultivates insight on the basis of this, it will become union of calm abiding and insight. When accomplishing calm abiding by relying on objects of focus such as the Bodhi tree, blue lotus, etc., some deny that it is meaningless to look at the object of focus with eye consciousness when accomplishing calm abiding on the basis of mind consciousness, which is like saying that it is not necessary to listen to the scriptures with ear consciousness when one is going to cultivate hearing on the basis of mind consciousness. Afterwards, one should dedicate the root of virtue to enlightenment. Second, the activity of post-attainment is to accumulate the two accumulations with the mind of enlightenment as the forerunner, not to take pleasing objects at any time, to abandon actions that harm the body and mind, and to take all activities with mindfulness and awareness. Third, the sign that the mind has been well taken is that the object of focus that has been cultivated arises, what is not wanted does not arise, it arises for as long as one wants, and one possesses pliancy of body and mind. Second, the actual dhyana that arises from this
