Because it is reasonable, because the identity and otherness have already been refuted. Fifth, refuting aggregates and shapes: It is not reasonable for the mere aggregate of skandhas to be considered as self. What similarity is there between the way 'self' and 'chariot' are designated? If the mere aggregate of the chariot's parts is a chariot, then it would follow that even when the parts are scattered, there would still be a chariot. If you say that the mere aggregate is not a chariot, but rather the shape of a particular arrangement of parts is the chariot, then that is also unreasonable, because there are no parts without a whole. Furthermore, if you consider the shape to be the chariot, is it the shape of each individual part, or the shape of the aggregate? In that case, is the distinction of the previous shape abandoned or not? If it is not abandoned, then just as there is no chariot in what is called a part, there would also be no chariot even at the time of the chariot itself, because the distinction of the shape of each individual part has not been abandoned. If it is abandoned, then that is also unreasonable, because if there is a distinction of shape that did not exist before at the time of the chariot itself, then it should be apprehended, but it is not apprehended. If, as in the second case, the shape of the aggregate of parts is the chariot, then that is also not reasonable, because the aggregate is not considered by you to be a substance, so the shape imputed to it is unreasonable, because you must acknowledge that what is imputed has a substantial basis for imputation. In this way, those reasons for examining the chariot should be applied to the self and the skandhas, and in particular, if the shape of the skandhas is the self, then mind is not the self, and it must be acknowledged that only form is the self, because shape exists only in what has form. Second, refuting the inexpressible person: Some of the Sthavira school, who are respected by many in their own tradition, say that because it is the agent and the basis for experiencing the ripening of karma, the self must be substantially existent, and because it cannot be expressed as any of the skandhas, identity, otherness, permanence, or impermanence, therefore the so-called inexpressible person is substantially existent. If they say this, then that is also unreasonable, because if the self is substantially existent, then it contradicts not being the skandhas, identity, and otherness, just as one who believes that mind is substantially existent believes that mind is a substance different from form and that mind and substance are one. Therefore, your assertion does not establish that the self is substantially existent, but rather it is reasonable to believe that it is nominally existent, because of identity.

And also because it is not established as self and other, it is considered to be nominally existent. Third, the meaning of what is established by that is: Like this, through the sevenfold analysis and the reasoning that refutes the inexpressible self, the aggregates themselves, which are the basis for imputing a self, are also established as being without inherent existence. If one examines in this way, one will not find any of the internal aggregates of appropriation or any external things like pots and cloths. As it says in the *Entering the Middle Way*: "Pots, cloths, soldiers, armies, forests, rows of trees, houses, vehicles, dust, and inns, and whatever things there are." From there, "These, when analyzed like a chariot, are not sevenfold existent, but exist as something other than that, by way of worldly convention." And the reasoning spoken of in the *Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life* and the *Precious Garland* is like what was said before. The main part of the reasoning that refutes the self of a person has been taught. Third, there are two meanings of what is established by such a refutation: by refuting the self of phenomena, it is established that phenomena are nominally existent in convention; and by refuting the self of a person, it is established that a person is nominally existent in convention. First, in worldly convention, it is said that it is true that a sprout arises from a seed. When one analyzes the four ways of arising and does not find it, then the arising of a sprout from a seed is only seen as true on the level of non-analysis. But if one analyzes, it is a collection without truth, so it is established as merely dependently imputed, like an illusion. As it says in the *Entering the Middle Way*: "Because things do not arise from no cause, from Īśvara, from a cause, etc., or from both self and other, therefore they arise dependently." This is how it is said. This way of establishing conventional truth is different from the tenets of those who assert things as real. It is the conventional truth of the Svātantrika-Madhyamaka school. As it says in the commentary to the *Entering the Middle Way*: "Just as in treatises other than the teachings of the Madhyamaka, the teaching of emptiness is not spoken of without being inverted, so too, the tenets that we have asserted here with refutation and response are not found in other treatises, just like the teaching of emptiness. Please be sure to ascertain this, wise ones." This is how it is said. The meaning here is that in the treatises of the realists, the emptiness spoken of here
