Both are false. Like empty things, images, etc., these dependent on aggregation are not unknown either. And, the root text says: If there is anything that is not dependent on arising, it does not exist. Such criticism seems very appropriate. Otherwise, when using illusions and moon in water as examples, one would fall into the fault of the reason being empty. The meaning to be established is as previously stated. The meaning of the reason has two aspects: establishing the subject-property and establishing pervasion. The first has two aspects: ascertaining the meaning of dependent arising, and how to establish its appearance. The first is: because it arises dependent on certain phenomena, it eliminates those that have never arisen, arise without cause, and arise from uncertain causes. Among these, there are two types of dependence: dependence of entity and dependence of designation. The first is: the entity of some phenomena is established from some other phenomena, such as light arising dependent on a lamp, as it is said in the Garland of Jewels: This arises because this arises, like light because a lamp arises. The second is: from some phenomena, the designation of "this is this" is established, as it is said in the same text: This exists because this arises, like short because long exists. The second is: the fact that appearing phenomena depend on conditions in name, has already been explained in the previous chapter on refuting causelessness. The terms cause and effect, etc., are also mutually dependent. If it is not "this is the effect of this" thus dependent on the cause, there is no establishment of the effect; and if it is not "this is the cause of this" thus dependent on the effect, there is no establishment of the cause. The scripture says: When the effect does not exist, the cause's causality does not exist, therefore all effects will become causes. Through this very reasoning, characteristics and characterized, reason and to-be-proven, knower and knowable, parts and whole, object of negation and that which is negated, long and short, before and after, this shore and the other shore, and so on, all are established as mutually dependent. Therefore, on this very appearing phenomenon, there is not even a little phenomenon that does not depend on entity or name, thus it is established that the subject-phenomenon has the reason of dependent arising.

Established. Second, there are two ways to prove pervasiveness: refuting dependent origination based on inherent existence, and refuting inherent existence based on dependent origination. First, inherent existence in the world refers to the nature or characteristic of phenomena, like the heat of fire or the moisture of water, which does not change in any time, place, or circumstance, and whose nature is known to abide therein. Therefore, inherent existence must possess three characteristics: its entity is not produced by conditions, like the temperature of water; its establishment does not depend on others, like long and short, before and after; and it does not change into something else, like a dancer's attire. Otherwise, it would not be inherent existence. For such inherent existence possessing these three characteristics, it is proven by reason that it does not arise dependently, because dependent origination necessarily depends on entities and establishments. Second, there are three points: refuting inherent existence by the mutual dependence of establishment, by examining whether the dependence of entities is established or not, and by examining whether these two are simultaneous or not. First, the establishment of long and short or cause and effect depends on mutual dependence, so it must depend on two extremes to be established. If it is self-existent, it does not need to depend; if it is not self-existent, then the dependence on it is not established. Therefore, it contradicts the establishment of inherent existence. As it is said in the root text: If an entity is established dependently, then it also depends on itself. If what is to be depended on is established, then what depends on what to be established? Second, whether an entity is established or not is itself dependence. If it is like the first case, dependence becomes meaningless. If it is like the second case, like a donkey's horn, there is no depender, so what depends on what? As it is said in the root text: If an entity is established dependently, how can it depend if it is not established? If it is established, why depend? It is not appropriate to depend. Third, there is no mutual action or reception between things that exist simultaneously. If they do not exist simultaneously, then when there is a place of dependence, there is no object of dependence; when there is an object of dependence, there is no place of dependence. So what depends on what? As it is said in the root text: Desire and the object of desire cannot exist simultaneously or non-simultaneously. Like desire, all phenomena cannot exist simultaneously or non-simultaneously.
