Those who say that the fruit exists in the future and is produced now are also unreasonable. Because the future has not obtained its own entity and does not exist, it contradicts existence. Just like this, if things have not been produced, where do some things exist? That is something that will not be produced, if it does not exist, what will be produced? It is said like this. For things that exist in common in both, they will not be produced, because production is the meaning of things being established, and the things themselves have already been established. As it is said, if it exists, what is the use of conditions? The second is the Sutra School and the Consciousness-only School, which believe that the fruit is newly produced without having existed before. There are four refutations to this: without a basis, the action is contradictory; without a fruit, the cause of designation is not established; the reasons are not the same, it is too extreme; refuting by examining whether to abandon or not abandon the nature of non-existence. The first is that in other dharmas, the action of production depends on other dharmas, and other dharmas cannot be produced, so it must depend on the fruit itself. If there is no that fruit, because there is no dependence, the action of production does not exist, how can it be produced? Therefore, the action of production and the entity of the dependent fruit rely on each other, and in the end nothing can be established. The root says: When production exists, this being produced appears, when it does not exist, how can one rely on production and say that it is being produced? It is said like this. The second is, this is the cause of this, and this is the fruit of this. In this way, the terms of cause and effect are established in mutual dependence, if there is no that fruit, what is designated as the cause, because there is no cause for the designation of cause. The scripture says: If there is no existence of the fruit, the causality of the cause does not exist, therefore all fruits will become causes. It is said like this. The third is, if the nature of the fruit did not exist before, or if it does not exist in the conditions, it can still be produced, then rabbit horns and other non-conditions can also be produced, because there is no difference from non-existence. As the root says: If it can be produced from those conditions even in the absence of it, then why can't it be produced from non-conditions? It is said like this. The fourth is, abandoning the previous nature of non-existence, or not abandoning?

Things become perishable. If according to the latter, they are mutually contradictory, and if according to the former, they are meaningless and mutually dependent. As it is said in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: "How is that thing in the present? What else is the thing that has become? If it does not exist, the thing cannot exist, when will the thing exist? If the thing has not been born, it will not be separated from non-thing. If it is not separated from non-thing, there is no time for the thing to exist." Thus it is said. Second, establishing pervasion: When there is birth, the result existing or not existing beforehand is contradictory, therefore there cannot be a third skandha in between. It has already been said that other things that have not been born cannot exist. Third, the root says: "For the meaning of non-existence or existence, conditions are not suitable." And in the Bodhicaryāvatāra it says: "For a thing that has come into existence, what is the need for a cause? However, if it does not exist, what is the need for a cause? Even with hundreds of millions of causes, it is impossible to change a non-existent thing." And in the Śataśāstra it says: "For those who want the result to exist and those who want the result not to exist, for the sake of the house, pillars and other decorations become meaningless." Thus it is said. Fourth, examining both cause and effect, there are also three aspects to the fourfold negation of arising and ceasing: establishing the sign, ascertaining the three modes of connection, and combining the established meaning with scripture. First, these appearances are empty of inherent existence, because one cause does not produce one or many effects, and many causes do not produce one or many effects. Second, the subject and the meaning to be proven are the same as before, and for the meaning of the reason, there are two aspects: establishing the property of the subject and establishing pervasion. First: Like this, it is not the case that one cause produces one effect, because cause and effect, even like minute particles, are seen as many parts, therefore there is no establishment of being one. And, from the eye etc., the arising of eye consciousness etc. is also seen as arising, therefore if the cause of the eye etc. does not arise later, then arising is also seen. It is also not the case that one cause produces many effects, because the case of Īśvara and Pradhāna etc. being permanent and singular causes has already been refuted.
