In general, the refutations that apply universally, such as the reasoning of one and many, separation, etc., will be explained in detail below. The difference between accepting or not accepting Svatantrika has already been discussed. Secondly, regarding the categories of reasoning for refuting the self of a person, there are four: refuting by examining in seven ways, condensing into five ways, condensing into four ways, and condensing into two ways. The first is in the Engaging in (Bodhicaryāvatāra): on top of the five—skandhas, being the same as the skandhas, being different from the skandhas, the support, the supported, and possessing—adding just the collection of skandhas and the arrangement of the skandhas, the shape, thus, it is made to refute by examining in seven ways. The second is in the Root (Mūlamadhyamakakārikā): in the context of examining fire and fuel, it says, "The wood itself is not fire, and there is no fire other than the wood. Fire is not something that possesses wood. There is no wood in the fire, because it is not there." Thus, examining through five aspects, and it says, "Using fire and wood as examples, I and all grasping consciousness, as well as pots, blankets, etc., are all completely distinguished." It is said that all dharmas and persons are included. Similarly, in the context of examining the Tathāgata, it says, "Not the skandhas, not other than the skandhas, there are no skandhas in it, it is not in them, the Tathāgata is not one who possesses skandhas, then what is the Tathāgata?" Thus, it is said to refute through five aspects. The third is divided into two: in the context of preventing the twenty views of the perishable, the fifth view is that the self is different from the skandhas. Since the self is not grasped as dependent on the perishable aggregates, it is not counted among the views of the perishable, as stated in the Engaging In and its commentary. Therefore, it is said to refute by examining each skandha in terms of being the same, the support, the supported, and possessing, four aspects each. Also, in the Commentary on the Mind of Enlightenment (Bodhicittavivaraṇa), it says, "The skandhas exist, but they are not permanent. It is also not the nature of the self. Anything that is permanent and impermanent is not an object of support and supported." This is regarding the aspect of possessing. It also says, "If it is other, then what possesses black is not other, if it possesses form." In this way, considering that it includes either being the same or being different, it is made to refute by examining in four ways: being the same, being different, the support, and the supported. The fourth is in the context of examining the self: "If the skandhas are the self, then it will be subject to birth and destruction. If it is other than the skandhas, then it will be without the characteristics of the skandhas." Thus, it is marked and refuted by examining in two ways: being the same and being different.

Where was it done? In its commentary, it says: "Furthermore, in the examination of the Tathagata and the examination of fire and firewood, five aspects are closely arranged, but why are there only two aspects here? It should be said: Because in those places five aspects are shown, and precisely because they have been shown elsewhere, they are not shown here again. Instead, two aspects are closely arranged in brief." And in the commentary on "Not the aggregates, not other than the aggregates," it says: "The support, the supported, and the possessor are all included in the category of 'otherness.'" As an example of possession, it is said, "Devadatta possesses wealth," which is considered from one aspect. If, in the earlier commentary on "The Buddha in relation to the aggregates," the example of the self relying on the aggregates is given as forests existing on the snowy mountains; the example of the aggregates relying on the self is given as lions dwelling in the forest; and the example of the self possessing the aggregates is given as a universal monarch possessing marks and signs, then the two, the support and the supported, are included in the aspect of otherness, and possession is included in both. This is the consistent view of all the texts, both above and below. The categories of reasoning that refute the extreme of clinging to existence have been explained. Third, the reasoning that refutes all extremes of elaboration is stated in the scripture: "Existence is drawn by non-existence, and non-existence is also drawn by existence." And the teacher says: "Since there is nothing to be refuted, I do not refute anything." And in the Two Truths, it says: "Since there is nothing to be refuted, in reality, there is clear non-obstruction." And so forth, in the Madhyamaka treatises, it is said that when either existence or non-existence is taken as something to be refuted, the other must also be taken as something to be refuted. Therefore, it is ultimately established that no extreme of elaboration, such as existence or non-existence, should be grasped. Fourth, the main points of reasoning are explained separately, and there are four: explaining the main point of reasoning for refuting the self of phenomena, explaining the main point of reasoning for refuting the self of persons, the meaning established by such refutation, and showing the order of refutation. In the first point, there are five ways of examining: examining the essence, which is the reasoning of one and many; examining the cause, which is the reasoning of the diamond sliver; examining the result, which is the reasoning of existence and non-existence, arising and ceasing; examining both, which is the reasoning of the four possibilities of arising and ceasing; and examining everything, which is the reasoning of dependent origination. The first of these is further divided into three: establishing the sign, establishing
