It is also not permissible to have attachment to the object of the present moment, because the past and future minds do not understand the meaning of the present. Similarly, expressing meaning with sound, grasping a vase with the hand, and so on, if examined in the three times, will be seen as unreasonable. This is also mentioned in the Ratnavali: 'The past and future realms, along with the senses, are meaningless.' etc. The third is the basis and characteristics, etc., which are the support and the supported. If this is examined, it is also not permissible, because there are contradictory actions and agents in one substance, different things are established simultaneously, they are independent, the prior and posterior do not meet, and there is repetition and contradiction in the basis of existing and non-existing dharmas, so the way of entering is not reasonable. This mainly appears in the chapter on examining conditioned phenomena in the Root Verses. The fourth is names for collections, such as chariots, armies, and garlands. If this is examined, it is also not permissible. For example, when the parts such as the body and wheels are assembled, the name of one chariot is spoken, but that name is not separate from the parts such as the wheels, and it becomes independent, so it is unreasonable in other respects. The parts themselves become the chariot, and contradictory dharmas cannot exist in one, so it is unreasonable in itself. Similarly, the parts themselves, such as the wheels, are also names for the collection of hubs and spokes, etc., which are negated by the reasoning that they are neither the same nor different from their own parts. This same principle applies to all the dharmas that say: 'Vases, cloths, cushions, armies, forests, garlands, trees, houses, chariots, dust, and guesthouses, etc., whatever things there are.' By applying it to all these things, it is established that all bodies are merely imputed and not substantial. From the perspective of pervasiveness, even things themselves are established as being without inherent existence, because they are pervaded by collections. As the scriptures say: 'There is no subtle thing apart from collections.' And 'Because the mind cannot grasp things apart from aggregates.' The fifth is mutual dependence, such as the terms for time, such as before and after, and directions such as east, and size, length, age, superiority, inferiority, etc. If this is examined, it is also not permissible. For example, for the time being, the term for these things before

Just as "this," it cannot be said that it does not depend on other companions, because it would become a fault that it is "this" in all cases; and it would become a fault that old and young, etc., are established without depending on each other. Like this, the expression of the former depends on the latter, and the expression of the latter also depends on the former, because they depend on each other, they cannot be established; and through transmission, it becomes oneself depending on oneself, so establishment and non-establishment should not depend on each other. This actually refutes the self-establishment of the expressions of big and small, good and bad, beautiful and ugly, happiness and suffering, one and many, superior and inferior, and from the perspective of pervasiveness, it will become refuting the self-nature of all dharmas, because there is no dharma that is not dependent arising. Regarding this, it is also said in the sutras: If things are established by dependence, then they also depend on themselves, if the things that are depended on are established, etc. Second, examining the differences with others and refuting, that is, for the dharmas that appear to others, after distinguishing them, admitting that some are true and some are not true. It is said in the sutras: In this or that place, if you observe but cannot find, the meaning of this sentence is that in the case of the same reason, it is equal. That is to say, it is the same in the existence of the reason for expression, it is the same in the non-existence of the reason for truth, and it is the same in the general and the difference, so it is refutation, these three have been explained. Third, refuting from the perspective of inference, that is, using the reason that has been admitted, inferring the unwanted result. It is said in the sutras: If self-nature exists, then sentient beings will not be born and die. And, if all dharmas have some kind of self-nature, then the Victorious One and the Hearers would know it. And, if form is truly existent and not non-existent, then the Great Vehicle would not overwhelm the world including gods, humans, and asuras and appear. Like this, the statements of inference are also mentioned in the sutras, and the reasoning of the masters is mostly established in this way, which has been explained in the previous chapters on inference and self-evidence. Fourth, refuting from the perspective of logic, it is said in the sutras: The world of existence is originally empty, this is the partial emptiness spoken of by the heretics. Like this, for the object of refutation that will not become a Madhyamika if it is not refuted.
