If I explain the methods of searching with the sevenfold reasoning, it is to explain through the reasoning of negating other extremes, and not in the manner of debate and response. What is explained in the scriptures is presented in the manner of negating the self of imputation. At that time, because the self of imputation is negated, the innate self is also negated. Because seeing the fault in the proof causes the mind that grasps the object to be proven to turn away, this is the tenet of those who accept reasoning. What Rongton Dampa said is truly amazing. Second, by introducing validity through reasoning, negating the self of imputation involves two aspects: refuting the valid means of proof, which is the cause that must exist, and stating the reasoning that harms, which is the cause that must not exist. The first is as follows: Logicians say that "valid cognition" is something that enters by the power of the object, is not mistaken about the true meaning, and can generate the desired result in one's own and others' minds. There are three refutations to this: the valid cognition itself is not established; even if established, it cannot generate in the mind; and even if it can generate, it cannot achieve the desired result. The first is: The teacher said in the Refutation of Arguments: If those meanings of yours are thoroughly proven by valid cognition itself, then how is your valid cognition itself thoroughly established? As it is said, there are two ways to refute the valid cognition that proves the true existence of things: general refutation and specific refutation. The first is divided into three: refuting the meaning of the word that is to be represented, the definition, and the determinant of that. First, the Sanskrit word for valid cognition is Pramāṇa (प्रमाण), which when translated into Tibetan becomes "first measurer." If analyzed with reason, it cannot be established even on the conventional level, because for it, the meaning of "first," that is, measuring first, is unreasonable, and the meaning of "measuring," that is, measuring, is also unreasonable. First, the meaning of measuring first is unreasonable, because in this way, the first moment of consciousness cannot determine the first moment of the object. Therefore, the first moment of consciousness is not valid cognition, because it cannot cut off superimposition, and because it is appearance and uncertain. Even if the later moments can determine, they will become not valid cognition because they are not the first measurer. Furthermore, measuring first refers to a substance not previously cognized.

First, does one measure the object, or does one measure the previously unknown category? According to the former, it would be unreasonable to have a decisive cognition of the object, because all cognitions that measure the object only engage with the previously unknown object, since all things are momentary. According to the latter, it is also unreasonable, because there is no fault in merely the category being previously unknown. Because this is possible, even if one allows some cases to exist, then the cognitions that measure blue, yellow, and happiness, suffering, etc., will definitely not be valid cognitions, because they only engage with objects whose categories have already been cognized. If one says that there is no fault because one cognizes the previously unknown category that is specifically determined by place, time, and form, this also cannot be said, because that is the ultimate of the object, so it cannot go beyond the faults previously stated. Moreover, valid cognition would be without true meaning, because it engages with false objects. Second, measuring the meaning of Māna is also unreasonable, because it is unreasonable to examine whether the agent and the act are the same or different. It is also unreasonable to examine three categories of agent and act. The first case is that all actions must depend on the deed and the agent, so measurement necessarily includes the object to be measured and the measurer. If the object to be measured and the measurer are the same entity, then it contradicts the agent and the act. If they are different, then they are unrelated at the same time. If they are not the same, then when one exists, the other does not exist, so it cannot be measured. The second case is that if one examines the act of measuring, whether it is measuring what has been previously measured, what has not been measured, or what is being measured, it is unreasonable. The third case is that if one examines whether the measurement is done by the measurer, the non-measurer, or a person who is neither the measurer nor the non-measurer, it is unreasonable. If it is unreasonable to analyze and examine, then it does not exist in ultimate truth. But in conventional truth, there is a valid cognition that measures the object of engagement that was previously unknown, so how can one refute it with reasoning? In conventional truth, it only depends on the establishment of the mere appearance of the object to be measured and the measurer. However, your clinging to the false conventional as true, like a conceptual thought, is not established even in conventional truth when analyzed. Second, refuting the definition of valid cognition is divided into two parts: stating the position and refuting it. The first part is that the definition of valid cognition stated in the treatises of the two masters of reasoning is: valid cognition is non-deceptive.
