If all appearing phenomena are examined, although they are unreasonable, they appear to be established as conventional truths, thus generating wisdom with aspects that realizes phenomena as illusory conventional truths. Moreover, according to the sequence of "conventional truth becoming the means, and ultimate truth arising from the means," one first acknowledges birth as a conventional truth, and when examining it with reason, birth itself cannot be found, thus giving rise to the wisdom that realizes ultimate truth. These methods should also be applied to all subsequent chapters. Secondly, the text of the chapter is divided into two parts. The first is establishing through reasoning, which is divided into two: generally refuting the four extremes of arising, and specifically refuting arising from other. The first has three parts: generally stating the proposition, establishing it through reasoning, and refuting objections to the refutation. The first is one verse, such as "not from self." This includes explaining the words of the four propositions, considering the number of four propositions that refute arising as fixed, and refuting the contradiction with the Madhyamaka school's lack of propositions. The first point is that others explain the latter half as indicating the thesis and the former half as indicating the reason, thus confusing the thesis with the proof, but this is not the case. Because when the four extremes of arising are proven to be non-existent, it is also proven that arising in general is non-existent, so it is meaningless to combine the thesis with the proof. Moreover, the former half does not have an active verb indicating the sign, so it is not the meaning of the words. Therefore, here, whatever internal or external phenomena, in whatever place or philosophical system, arising from self is never possible, etc., thus showing the four propositions. "Whatever" is the word that refers to the dependent, the internal and external phenomena, and is a synonym for "whoever." "Wherever" is the word for the basis, meaning in some place where the extreme is not established. "Whenever" is the word for time, meaning at any time. Now, if one wonders why the final negation is shown separately from the previous four negations, Machik (a place name in Tibet) said that for the "non-non-manifestation" residing in the border area, some texts say: "Whatever phenomena, wherever, arising exists at any time, not from self, not from other, not from both, not from no cause." Like this recitation, the translation should be done according to the recitation. However, no text has been found that recites in this way, so the latter half

If one does not observe the previous half of the syllable 'Ma,' it is evident that the treatise was composed in this way to demonstrate the vow to merely negate production. Secondly, the Samkhya school, proponents of substantial entities within our own tradition, the naked ascetics, and the materialists are known to have four extreme views on production, and since there is no fifth wrong conception that is known to be established as real in production, is it because (establishing four vows) is appropriate for negating wrong conceptions that are known to be established as real? Or, for those who have not entered a philosophical system, it is only appropriate to have four extremes of doubt about production, so (Tsongkhapa) also made four vows to negate them. For production alone, there are two possibilities: dependence on causes and non-dependence on causes. Dependence is necessarily divided into two: the effect arising from the cause alone, and different entities and the same entity. Therefore, there are three possible doubts: arising only from the effect and the same entity, arising only from different entities, and arising from both. Because there are no other possible doubts. Thirdly, if one shows four vows in this way, one might think that this contradicts what is said in the 'Refutation of Disputes' that Madhyamikas have no vows. In response to this, Palo said: What is said to be without vows is the absence of vows to establish complete exclusion, but it is not that there is not even a vow to merely refute distinctions, so there is no contradiction. Jamyang Yeshe said: The vow to refute distinctions is also made from their perspective because they want to refute the wrong conceptions of others, but for the Madhyamikas themselves, there is not even a vow to merely refute. Jamyang Trakpa said: In the ultimate sense, there are no vows of affirmation or negation whatsoever, but merely in the conventional sense, what is appropriate here is merely the vow to refute distinctions, and in general, there is also the vow to establish complete exclusion, so there is no contradiction. Among these three statements, for the first statement, from ignorance to old age and death, the twelve links of dependent origination, I also regard as like a dream or illusion. And so on, at the time of the basis, and whoever, self and others, wishes to quickly attain enlightenment, the root of bodhicitta. And so on, at the time of the path, and liberated from all faults, possessing all qualities, the only friend of all sentient beings. And so on, at the time of the result, many vows to establish complete exclusion are also spoken of, so there is harm. For the second statement, like all that has been said, because there is nothing to be refuted, I refute nothing. And so on, many vows to refute distinctions are spoken of, so there is harm.
