Disturbances of body and mind arising from sorrow and discomfort, all these will arise completely from birth. If that is the case, then this great mass of suffering, which is entirely unmixed with happiness, will arise. Second, regarding the way to enter and return from it: The root of the suffering of samsara is the formations that manifest karma. For this reason, wise people who directly see the suchness of dependent origination do not manifest karma that throws [one into rebirth]. For this reason, the unwise are doers of formations, while the wise who see suchness, abandoning ignorance, are not doers of formations, because they have directly seen suchness. Second, briefly showing the way of reversal: When ignorance ceases, that is, when it has been abandoned, then formations and so on will also not arise, because the cause is incomplete. Then, by what does ignorance cease? Ignorance ceases by knowing the suchness of dependent origination without error and by meditating on that suchness. When ignorance ceases, formations cease. Likewise, when each preceding limb, such as formations, ceases, then each subsequent limb will not manifest, because there is no condition. Thus, with the cessation of the limbs of existence, that sole mass of suffering is also completely ceased in that way. Second, combining with scripture: In the Sālu Ljangpa Sutra it says: Internal dependent origination arises because of two things. What two? Namely, cause and connection, and condition and connection. Among these, what is the internal dependent origination that arises in connection with the arising of cause? Namely, due to the condition of ignorance, there are formations; due to the condition of formations, there is consciousness; due to the condition of consciousness, there are name and form; due to the condition of name and form, there are the six sense sources; due to the condition of the six sense sources, there is contact; due to the condition of contact, there is feeling; due to the condition of feeling, there is craving; due to the condition of craving, there is grasping; due to the condition of grasping, there is existence; due to the condition of existence, there is birth; due to the condition of birth, there are aging, death, and sorrow.

Reciting mantras and suffering, discomfort, and conflicts will arise. In this way, only a great mass of suffering will arise. If ignorance does not arise, then formations will not appear either. Similarly, if birth does not arise, then old age and death will not appear either. And so on, it is widely taught. Third, the title of the chapter is: In the "Explanation of the Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way: The Light of True View," "Examination of the Twelve Limbs of Existence," which is the explanation of the twenty-sixth chapter. Third, explaining the benefits of realizing special dependent origination: If one truly understands the reality of dependent origination, then all inverted views will be refuted, which is what the twenty-seventh chapter explains. There are three points to this, the first being the connection of the chapter. In the Sutra of the Sal Tree King, it says: "Whoever truly sees such dependent origination, does not rely on the past extreme, nor does he rely on the future extreme." So, what is the past extreme? What is the future extreme? And how can one not rely on them? In order to explain these, this chapter is taught. Second, the main text of the chapter is divided into two parts, the first being the proof through reasoning, which is further divided into two points: identifying the views to be refuted, and explaining the reasoning that refutes these views. The first point is: "I existed in the past," or "I did not exist," or "I both existed and did not exist," or "I neither existed nor did not exist"; and the view that the world is permanent, etc., or impermanent, or both permanent and impermanent, or neither permanent nor impermanent, these eight views are all dependent on the past extreme. Here, the past extreme is the past body in relation to the present body. The extreme is the earlier part that is transmitted from one life to another. Dependence is clinging to it. "I will exist in another form in the future," or "I will not exist," or "I both will exist and will not exist," or "I neither will exist nor will not exist"; and the view that the world has an end, etc., or is endless, or both has an end and is endless, or neither has an end nor is endless, these eight views are all dependent on the future extreme. Here, the future extreme is the future in relation to the present body.
