There is no absence and no destruction either. If one desires to attain nirvana with remainder by abandoning which afflictions, and to attain nirvana without remainder by ceasing which suffering, then this desire is unreasonable. Thus it is. The second has three: showing by refuting the faults of others, the way of being without fault oneself, and refuting the faults of others' statements. The first is: If all of this is not empty, then there is no arising and no destruction. From abandoning what and ceasing what, the desire to attain nirvana is unreasonable. Because the cessation of suffering by abandoning afflictions is unreasonable, because it is established by its own nature. The second has two: showing nirvana as being free from extremes, and refuting the proliferation of the four extremes. The first is: Only in name is it established that nirvana is attained by the cessation of afflictions and suffering, but in ultimate truth, because there are no afflictions to be abandoned, there is no attainment of liberation from the cessation of suffering, because there is no self-nature, there is no annihilation and no permanence, because there is no abandonment and cessation by nature, there is no arising of antidotes, that is called nirvana. The second has two: refuting the establishment of the dependent nirvana as the four extremes, and refuting the establishment of the dependent Bhagavan as the four extremes. The first has three: refuting the establishment of things and non-things separately, refuting the establishment of both, and refuting the establishment of non-two. The first has four: refuting the establishment of being real, refuting the establishment of being unreal, refuting the fault of nirvana not being established because of this, and summarizing the meaning of refuting both. The first is: The Vaibhashikas assert that nirvana is established as a substance. Refuting it: Briefly, nirvana is not a substance, if it were, then it would follow that it has the characteristics of aging and death. It is pervasive, because there is no substance without aging and death. Here, death refers to destruction. Also, if nirvana were a substance, then nirvana would become conditioned, because there is no substance that is not conditioned. Also, if nirvana were a substance, then how could nirvana not depend on the aggregation of causes and conditions, because there is no substance that does not arise depending on the aggregation of causes and conditions.

Returning to the topic. Secondly, regarding the view of the Red-Clad Sect that Nirvana is like the extinguishing of a lamp, and the Sautrāntika school's view that Nirvana is merely the cessation of afflictions and birth, the refutation is as follows: If Nirvana is not a real entity, then how can it exist as a non-entity with its own nature? This is impossible, because in any aspect, if Nirvana is not a real entity, yet it is admitted that Nirvana exists as a non-entity with its own nature, this is illogical. This is because saying that the transformation of a real entity is a non-entity, yet not understanding that things that exist by their own nature can transform. If it is thought that Nirvana is not a non-entity after the disappearance of a previously existing real entity, but is established by its own nature, then how can Nirvana not be dependent on a real entity? It must be dependent on a real entity. Because whatever does not arise dependent on a real entity is not a non-entity after the disappearance of a previously existing real entity, nor does it exist by its own nature. Thirdly, if Nirvana is neither a real entity nor a non-entity, then wouldn't Nirvana be non-existent? Answer: In conventional terms, there is no fault in Nirvana being non-existent. Because relying on the coming and going of the aggregates and other real entities, the arising from one to another is called samsara. Or, being established as samsara with the flow of the aggregates as the cause, this merely refers to not relying on the former and not taking the latter as the cause, and this is called Nirvana. The meaning here is that there are two reasons for establishing samsara: relying on the flow of the aggregates to establish samsara, and taking the flow of the aggregates as the cause to establish samsara. Nirvana refers to the situation that does not belong to either of these two reasons. Fourthly, Nirvana is not a real entity, nor is it a non-entity established by its own nature, which is reasonable. Because the Buddha taught that clinging to the view that arising is a real entity and destruction is a non-entity established by its own nature is to be abandoned, and Nirvana is not to be abandoned. Secondly, refuting the view that is established on both: Some heretics believe that liberation Nirvana is a real entity in terms of its essence, and a non-entity in terms of the opposite of the object to be refuted, therefore,
