Because things do not depend on causes and conditions. Second, for those who speak of emptiness, the establishment of cause and effect, etc., is reasonable, because the sutras say that whatever arises dependently is empty of inherent existence. As it is said in the Questions of Ajātaśatru, "Whatever is born from conditions is unborn; it has no nature of being born. Whatever depends on conditions is said to be empty. Whoever knows emptiness is mindful." Therefore, dependent arising, which is empty of inherent existence, is established dependently, because it is the object of establishing worldly and transworldly terms. This is the Middle Way, the path, because it eliminates the views of permanence and annihilation, and leads to the realization of the Middle Way. Therefore, there are no phenomena that are not empty of inherent existence, because there are no phenomena that do not depend on dependent arising. Third, there are six: the fault of the Four Noble Truths being unreasonable, the fault of the four perfections, etc., being unreasonable, the fault of the four fruits being unreasonable, the fault of the Three Jewels being unreasonable, the fault of karma and its effects being unreasonable, and the fault of terms being unreasonable. The first has three: a brief statement, a detailed explanation, and a summary. First: If all internal and external things are not empty of inherent existence, then they will become unborn and undying. If you accept this, then you will not have the Four Noble Truths. The second has four: the fault of suffering being unreasonable, the fault of the origin being unreasonable, the fault of cessation being unreasonable, and the fault of the path being unreasonable. First: If it is not dependently arising, which is empty of inherent existence, how can there be suffering? Because what is said to be impermanent is the characteristic of suffering, and this does not exist for things that are established by their own nature. Second: If suffering exists by its own nature, then what arises from causes and afflictions? It will not arise. Therefore, for those who say that emptiness is unreasonable, there is no origin. Third: If suffering exists by its own nature, then there will be no cessation of suffering. Because things that are established by their own nature are indestructible and remain forever. Therefore, inherently establishe

If one accepts phenomena as being inherently existent, that harms cessation. Fourth, if the path has inherent existence, then it is not reasonable to cultivate it, because what is inherently existent cannot be cultivated or accomplished. If the path is something to be cultivated, then according to your system, it is not inherently existent. Third, if suffering, origin, and cessation do not exist, then what is it that the path will attain by ceasing suffering? That is not reasonable. Second, as a phenomenon, how can the truth of suffering be fully known later? It is impossible, because if it were not fully known by its own nature before, then it could not be known. This is pervasive, is it not because what is inherently existent does not change? Indeed, it is. Just as suffering cannot be fully known, similarly, according to your system, abandoning the origin, realizing cessation, and cultivating the path are also unreasonable, just like fully knowing suffering, because they previously exist in the nature of being unabandoned, unrealized, and uncultivated. Third, the four fruits, including stream-enterer, etc., are also unreasonable, just like suffering cannot be fully known, because there is no knowing of suffering and abandoning of the origin, etc. Furthermore, if the four fruits are not attained by their own nature before, then how can they be attained later? It is impossible, because inherent nature is held without reversal. The fourth part has three aspects: refuting the non-existence of the Sangha Jewel, refuting the non-existence of the Dharma Jewel, and refuting the non-existence of the Buddha Jewel. First: If there is no fruit, there is no fruit-dweller. Stream-enterers also do not exist. If there are eight types of individuals, if those do not exist, there is no Sangha. Thus it is said. Second: Because the noble truths do not exist, the sacred Dharma also does not exist. Thus it is said. Third: If the Dharma and Sangha do not exist, then how can the Buddha exist? Thus it is said. Furthermore, if one believes that the Buddha exists by his own nature, then according to your system, the fully enlightened Buddha is bodhi, that is, the omniscient wisdom.
