So, why is this done? Because it is to show that the cause of afflictions is without inherent existence, this treatise is arranged. Second, the tenets of the treatise are divided into two: First, establishing through reasoning, which is also divided into two: refuting the afflictions themselves, and refuting the search for means to abandon the means of establishing them. The first is divided into two: commonly refuting the three poisons, and separately refuting them. The first is divided into four: refuting with the sign of dependent arising, refuting with the sign of no support, refuting with the sign of no cause, and refuting with the sign of no object. The first is: slightly refuting with the words of the Sage in one's own school, the sutras say that the main afflictions, attachment, hatred, ignorance, etc., commonly arise from the conceptual thought that grasps at things as real. As it is said: "Desire, your root, is known to arise from conceptual thought. If there is no conceptual thought for you, therefore you do not arise for me." Thus it is said. Separately, those are, in order, from the attractive object and the unattractive object, and from the reversed inversion from the way things are, because they arise entirely from the display of the three aspects. Therefore, those afflictions, the subject, are not truly existent, because they do not have their own nature, because you, those attractive and unattractive, and the three aspects or objects of inversion, arise in dependence on grasping at them. The second is divided into two: refuting the self of the support, refuting the mind of the support. The first is: the existence itself of the self of the person, and the non-existence itself of its negation, if analyzed in detail, cannot be established in any way, because, for it, whether it exists or does not exist, such discriminations will turn back. Because it has already been refuted before. Therefore, if the support does not exist, then how can the existence itself of the nature of the afflictions that depend on it, and the non-existence itself of its negation, be established? Because there is no support. Establishing that itself is, there are no supports, that is, the afflictions that depend on any support do not exist, because the self of the person who is the support of those afflictions is also not established by its own nature. The second is, the Sutra school and the Mind-Only school believe that the non-existence of the self of the support is true, however, the arising of afflictions in dependence on the afflicted mind is

If it is said that because it arises, it is not established as having no basis. The afflictions, as dharmas, the mind with afflictions, if searched for in five ways, cannot be found. If it is that itself, it will become the agent and the action being the same. If it is other, it will become independent of the afflicted one. If it is the basis and the based, the essence will become other. If it is possessing, it will become either that itself or something else. For example, just as the self that sees by relying on one's own aggregates cannot be found in the aggregates in five ways. The mind with afflictions, as dharmas, cannot be found in the afflictions in five ways. Because the other reasons are the same, if the second is other, it will become an afflicted one existing independently of afflictions, therefore, an Arhat should also have it. For example, just as the self that clings to self by relying on one's own aggregates cannot be found in the aggregates in five ways. Third, as previously stated, these afflictions arise by relying on what is attractive, unattractive, and inverted. What afflictions are established by nature by relying on the cause of what is attractive, unattractive, and inverted? Because the cause of what is attractive, unattractive, and inverted is not inherently existent. Fourth, if it is said that these afflictions are inherently existent because their basis or object is inherently existent. Forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile objects, and the six dharmas are the basis and object of attachment, hatred, and ignorance, you may think so, but the afflictions that take them as objects are not inherently established because forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile objects, and dharmas are merely conceptually constructed and are empty of truth. If these objects are not inherently existent, how do they appear? Even if they are not inherently existent, appearance is not contradictory because the appearance is like a city of gandharvas, like water in a mirage, like a dream, it only appears that way to a deluded mind. Second, the specific refutation is divided into two: refuting attachment and hatred, refuting ignorance. The first is divided into two: refuting the cause of what is attractive and unattractive, thereby showing that the result is prevented. The first is divided into two: refuting by the falsity of the basis, refuting by mutual dependence. The first is the basis of form.
