Furthermore, by habitually realizing the dependent arising as an illusion in conventional truth, one abandons the afflictions of the three realms, and the peace of nirvana is attained either in this life or, if not attained here, it will be attained in future lives without effort, as Aryadeva said: "If by knowing that nature, one does not attain cessation here, in another life, without effort, one will definitely attain it, like one's karma." As it is said. Those of the Pratyekabuddha lineage, through the stages of hearing, thinking, and meditating, practice as appropriate, but the complete Buddhas have not appeared, and the Shravakas have also been exhausted, yet they are born in empty fields, from the wisdom of heat, or the wisdom of intermediate forbearance, or the wisdom of the path of meditation, without relying on a virtuous friend in this life, but through the power of past merit and aspiration, they are easily born, so in that life, the wisdom of the Pratyekabuddha arises. Second, combining with scripture: In the Sutra of the Mother, the Bodhisattva Sadāprarudita, even abandoning his own body and life, how he sought the Mother is extensively explained, meaning that one should seek in that way. Third, in the commentary on the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way, "The Light of Correct View," there is the name "Examination of Self and Phenomena," which is the explanation of the eighteenth chapter. In the commentary, only the name "Examination of Self" is seen. Fourth, regarding the emptiness of dependent arising time, there are two: refuting the nature of time, and refuting its proof. First, there are three, first, explaining the connection of the chapter: Thus, although the nature of things has been refuted, time has not been refuted before, so it exists, and because it exists, do the causes of those established things also exist? Answer: Because the three times are empty of inherent existence, the causes of those established things also do not exist, and this chapter is composed to show this meaning. Second, explaining the text of the chapter is divided into two: first, establishing through reasoning, divided into two: refuting the establishment of the three times as inherently existent, and refuting the proof of inherent existence. The first is divided into three: refuting the establishment of the present and future as inherently existent, sequentially transferring it to another, comparing that knowledge to another dharma. The first is divided into three: two times

Refuting dependence on the past, refuting non-dependence on the past, summarizing the meaning. First: If the present and future exist inherently, then does existence depend on the past or not depend on the past? If the present and future that occur depend on the past, then the present and future that occur, as a dharma, will exist in the past time, because they inherently depend on the past. If you want to avoid the fault of uncertainty, and the present and future do not exist in that past time, then how can the present and future depend on the past? Because when there is a dharma to depend on, there is no place to depend on, and when there is a place to depend on, there is no dharma to depend on. Second: Other schools say: Time ripens what arises, time gathers beings, time awakens from sleep, it is very difficult to transcend time. In this way, time is a permanent substance, so do these two exist without depending on the past? It is not possible for the present and future to be established without depending on the past, because the past directly establishes the future as the present, and indirectly establishes the future as the future. Third: Because it is not established to depend on the past and not depend on the past, therefore the time of the present and future is also not inherently existent. Second: The way in which the present and future are not established as dependent on the past and not dependent on the past is that, by this reasoning, one should know that the remaining times, past, future, and present, are not established as dependent and non-dependent, and that the two situations of present and past depending on the future and not depending on the future should be understood alternately, such as "the past and the future, if they depend on the present," and so on, and "the past and the present, if they depend on the future," and so on, these passages should be translated. Third: Just as the three times do not exist when examined as mutually dependent and non-dependent, similarly, birth, abiding, and cessation, summarized by superior, inferior, and intermediate, and the desire realm, form realm, and formless realm, and learners, non-learners, and neither, and old, middle, and young, etc., are mutually dependent things, related to the three, and from then on, two and three, etc., summarized by one, etc., are also dependent and

Therefore, it should be known that if one observes without relying on other things, things themselves are empty. If it is said that "the two things, the highest and the lowest, if they depend on the middle thing," etc., these contents need to be translated. Second, refuting the proof of self-existence is divided into two parts: refuting the measure of proof and refuting the thing of proof. The first part is: If time is self-existent, because its measure is said to be a moment, a short time, an instant up to a kalpa, so its measure exists. If the measure is self-established, then time either does not reside in the second moment, or it resides, and then it is grasped by the measure. If it is like the first case, then time will not be grasped by the measure of moments, etc., because it does not reside in the second moment. This is because the moment of arising itself has the contradiction of acting and not acting, and it does not exist in the second time, so it cannot be grasped by the measure. If it is like the second case, how can time be grasped and established by the measure of moments, etc.? This is unreasonable. If there is a residing time, it will be grasped by the measure of moments, etc., but in reality there is no residing time that can be grasped by the measure. If someone thinks like this, if there is time different from things, then it should be able to appear to worldly perception, but just because this difference is not observed, it is negated. Since things are established by the inference of momentary differences between before and after, the time different from the self-nature of momentary things cannot be grasped. The second part is, if your own sect believes that there is no residing time different from momentary things, even so, since things exist, the time established based on it is self-existent, where would there be time of non-existent things? It does not exist. It's like the sharpness of a rabbit's horn. Second, combined with scripture: The Blessed One also said in the Sutra of the Noble Elephant Strength: "If dharmas have some self-nature, then the Victorious One and his Shravaka disciples would know it. Constant dharmas would not enter into Nirvana. The wise would never be without elaboration."
