This is to cease the arising and ceasing of samsara. Then, by what will these actions and afflictions cease? That is also ceased by the path of ceasing the cause. Like this, actions and afflictions, as previously stated, arise from the conceptual thoughts that grasp at characteristics, which are the cause of grasping at self and what belongs to self, and so on. Those conceptual thoughts arise from various elaborations of grasping at characteristics. The elaborations of characteristics are ceased by the habit of viewing all phenomena, such as what is to be known and what knows, what is to be said and what says, as being empty of inherent existence. Third, refuting contradictions with scriptures: If there is no self and no belonging to self, then, "Oneself is one's own protector, Who else could be a protector? Oneself well-tamed, The wise will attain heaven." And, "Black and white actions will not perish, What one has done, one will experience." Is this not contradictory to what was said? Although it was said that way, but, "Here there is no self or sentient being, These phenomena all have causes." And, "All phenomena are without self." Thus, the intention of the sutras must be sought. Like this, in general, the Buddhas, for those inferior beings to be tamed, like throwing away far away, if they say there is no cause and effect and slander, then, in order to take care of those who are going to fall into the lower realms, they consider the existence of self that is nominally established on conventional phenomena, and say there is a self. For those intermediate beings to be tamed, although they believe in cause and effect, but because the clinging to self has not ceased, they fall into samsara, in order to take care of them, they consider the fact that the phenomena that have refuted the truly existent self exist conventionally, and say there is no self. For those superior beings to be tamed, those who believe in the results of actions in the conventional sense and see that there is no truly existent self, in order to abandon the grasping at the characteristics of phenomena, they show that in the ultimate sense, there is neither the self to be refuted nor the no-self established after refuting the self. Therefore, there is no fault of contradicting the scriptures on our side. In the Ratnakuta Sutra, it is said: 'Light-protected one, the so-called self is one extreme. The so-called no-self is the second extreme. What is in the middle of these two extremes is unspeakable.'
