Refutations individually. First: Although cyclic existence and nirvana are thus negated, they nevertheless possess the nature of entities, since they are bound by the iron chains of afflictions and there is liberation from them. If you think like that, then in that case, just as before, it is the same if you examine what is to be taken up and the taker. Briefly, the conditioned phenomena that are to be taken up are dharmas. They are not bound by karma and afflictions, nor will they be liberated from them, since they are by nature such that they arise in the first moment and disintegrate in the second. Sentient beings, who are the takers, are also dharmas. They are not bound and will not be liberated. If they are impermanent, then the fault is the same as before with conditioned phenomena. If they are permanent, then the activity of binding and liberation is not appropriate. Second, there are two: refuting binding and refuting liberation. First, there are three: refuting by examining whether or not they are accompanied by taking up, refuting by examining the time of what is to be bound and what binds, and refuting by examining karma in the three times. First: If attachment and so forth, which are the objects of taking up, bind conditioned phenomena or some person, then it should be examined whether what is to be bound is something that already exists or does not exist. In that case, what is accompanied by taking up will not be bound, since it is pointless. What does not have taking up will also not be bound, since they are mutually contradictory and cannot bind. What other situation could bind, since having and not having taking up are directly contradictory, so there is no third category? Second: If, like a chain that is already established binding Devadatta, attachment and so forth, which bind, exist before the conditioned phenomena or person that is to be bound, then if they depend on those to bind, then what binds, which was already established, also does not exist, since it has no basis. And if what is to be bound is already established, then there is no need for a connection with what is to be bound. Third: It should be understood that the remainder of refuting what has been bound is shown by preventing the activity of going to what has passed, has not passed, and is being gone to. Briefly, it is because the recitation of "what has been bound does not bind" and so forth should be translated. Second: If there is liberation because the means of liberation are taught in the sutras, and because that exists, there is also binding, then if you say that, then it should be examined whether liberation exists in something that is bound or not bound. In that case, what is bound is not liberated, since the two activities are mutually contradictory.

If one is not bound, one will not be liberated either, because liberation is meaningless. If it is thought that liberation is impossible for that which is bound, and therefore that which is bound is in the process of being liberated, that is also unreasonable. If that were the case, bondage and liberation would occur simultaneously, because these two are contradictory actions and cannot exist at the same time, like light and darkness. Third, avoiding excessive inferences from negation: The Shravaka schools think that if samsara and nirvana are no different, then when will I transcend the wilderness and solitude of samsara, and when will I attain nirvana? They have a strong desire to accept and reject samsara and peace, and therefore rely on spiritual friends, uphold morality, study, contemplate, meditate, etc. All actions that are engaged in for the purpose of abandoning samsara and attaining peace will become meaningless. If someone thinks like this, then, I will enter nirvana without taking anything, and nirvana will become mine. Those who cling in this way, all the efforts they initiate, even in conventional truth, cannot enter nirvana, because their attachment to the aggregates is very strong, because in the absence of establishing acceptance and rejection, or self and what belongs to self, they view them perversely. So, in what way can one enter nirvana? For the ultimate truth of the realm of Dharma, so-called nirvana, there is neither newly arising merit nor old faults to be removed. When directly realizing this, it can be said that one has entered nirvana in name only. Because samsara and peace have not been established from the beginning, but are equality, what is the samsara to be abandoned? And what is the nirvana to be attained? Because it has not been established from the beginning, yet it is distinguished in this way. This clarifies the Madhyamaka view of 'exhaustion without arising.' The Akashagarbha Sutra says, 'There is nothing to be removed here.' etc. The Ornament of Clear Realization says, 'The exhaustion of defilements and non-arising are called wisdom and enlightenment.' etc., which has the same meaning, and therefore it is different from the schools that speak of inherent existence. Second, combining with scripture: The Noble Subduing Mara.
