Abiding well in the sky, all dharmas are shown to be without substance. At that time, a name is given in accordance with that meaning, and the name is made known throughout the world. All the gods emit excellent sounds, and will become victors called "Without Substance." Immediately after birth, he takes seven steps, and the Victorious One declares that all dharmas are without substance. The capable one who teaches all dharmas, when he becomes the king of the Dharma of the Buddha, from the grass, trees, thickets, medicinal mountains, and rocks, the sound of all dharmas being without substance also arises. In that world, all the sounds that exist say that everything is without substance, and nothing exists. Such is the guide of the world, and the aspect of sound is extremely manifest. It is said, "Everything is without substance, and nothing exists." The meaning of this saying is that in order to declare negation by means of negation, the meaning of without substance is the meaning of without inherent existence. The commentary explains it thus. Thirdly, in the commentary on the Root Wisdom of the Middle Way, the Light of True Seeing, is the explanation of the fifteenth chapter, called "Examination of Inherent Existence." Thirdly, there are three refutations of the states of bondage and liberation: refuting the inherent nature of samsara, refuting the proof of its cause and effect, and showing the means of entering into that very reality. The first has three parts. First, the connection of the treatise is that although the inherent nature of things is denied in this way, it is still existent because samsara exists, and if there were no states of bondage and liberation, then samsara itself would not be reasonable. Therefore, in order to show that samsara, nirvana, bondage, and liberation are without inherent nature, this treatise is composed. Secondly, there are two parts to the text of the treatise. First, there are three proofs by reasoning: refuting that samsara and nirvana are established by inherent nature, refuting that bondage and liberation are established by inherent nature, and avoiding the extreme consequences of refutation. The first has two parts: refuting that samsara is established by inherent nature, and refuting that nirvana is established by inherent nature. The first has two parts: refuting the samsara of actions, and refuting the samsara of persons. The first is: if samsara exists by inherent nature, then either the aggregates or the person should revolve. In this regard, if your own school says that the aggregates of action revolve, then is it a permanent or impermanent aggregate that revolves? If it is the former, then those aggregates are permanent and do not revolve.

O. The affairs of samsara, temporary taking and giving, are not allowed because of that reason. Secondly, if it is like impermanence, it will not transmigrate, because what comes first will not go to what comes later. Secondly, if a person transmigrates, then something that exists substantially or nominally transmigrates. Other schools assert that sentient beings who exist substantially, independent of the aggregates, transmigrate, which is unreasonable, because the order of examining permanence and impermanence is the same for them. Like the second, if some of your own school assert that the substantially existent self transmigrates, that is the same, but if the aggregates are neither the same as it, nor different from it, and the person who is inexpressible as permanent or impermanent transmigrates, then the previous fault is not the same. If you say that, then what kind of inexpressible person transmigrates? It is unreasonable, because if the self is sought in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases by means of the five modes of being one, being different, possessing, the basis, and what is based on it, it cannot be found. Furthermore, even if that self is admitted to exist, if it transmigrates from the appropriation of a human to the appropriation of a god, then between abandoning the appropriation of a human and not taking the appropriation of a god, there will be no existence of aggregates, because the appropriation of a human ceases and the appropriation of a god does not arise. If there is no existence and no aggregates of appropriation in between, then what kind of self transmigrates? Because there is no basis for imputing a self in between, there is no self of the transmigrator. Secondly, refuting the self-establishment of nirvana is divided into two: refuting the nirvana of the aggregates, and refuting the nirvana of the person. First, if nirvana exists by its own nature, then does it exist in the aggregates or in the self? If it is like the first, then the aggregate of formation attaining nirvana is not reasonable in any way, whether it is permanent or impermanent, because the permanent is immutable and cannot accept or reject faults and virtues, and the impermanent ceases in an instant, so it cannot accept or reject faults and virtues. Secondly, like the second examination, the nirvana of sentient beings is not reasonable in any way, whether it is substantially existent or nominally existent, because if it is substantially existent, then the reasoning of examining permanence and impermanence is the same, and if it is nominally existent, then it cannot be found when searching for it in the aggregates by means of the five modes. Secondly, refuting the self-establishment of bondage and liberation is divided into two: common refutation.
