These two phenomena called "knowing" exist because of contact; without contact, they do not exist. Thinking that all conditioned things have contact, it is said. However, those scriptures are provisional, and this is stated to show that contact has no inherent nature. Secondly, the treatise on differentiation has two parts. First, establishing through reasoning has three aspects: stating the proposition in brief, explaining the reasons in detail, and summarizing the meaning of the occasion. The first is: the object to be seen (form), the seer (eye), and the one who sees (eye consciousness)—these three, two by two, such as eye and form, or eye and consciousness, or consciousness and form, do not touch each other. All three together also do not simultaneously touch each other. Similarly, desire, its basis (the mind that clings), and the object to be clung to (the appealing object), are also two by two, and all do not touch each other. The remaining afflictions, such as hatred, and the remaining sense bases, such as the ear, are also examined in three ways, two by two, and all do not touch each other. The second has two parts: no contact because of not being established as other, and no contact as being the same or other. The first has three parts: establishing the inverse pervasion and stating the sign, comparing this reasoning to others, and establishing the property of the subject. The first is: contact is pervaded by another substance. Therefore, the object to be seen, the seer, and the one who sees, etc., do not have that pervading other substance. Therefore, the pervaded (contact) does not occur, because if contact were to occur, it would have to be established as other and other. The second is: thus, the object to be seen, the seer, etc., are mutually dependent phenomena. Not only is there no contact because there is no otherness in their own nature, but also, if we examine external objects such as pots, they do not touch any cloth, etc., because they cannot be established as other substances. The third has two parts: not being established as other due to mutual dependence, and not being established as other due to the absence of a general characteristic of otherness. The first is: in the world, other pots, etc., depend on other cloths, etc., and are designated as other in name. If there is no basis for dependence, such as cloth, then other pots, etc.

Because it is seen that other terms cannot be established. The pot is the subject of the proposition, it should not be different from the woolen cloth (Tibetan carpet), because it depends on the woolen cloth. The pervasion is: whatever depends on something and becomes something else, truly should not be different from that thing, just as a sprout should not be different from a seed. If it is thought that even if the pot does not depend on the woolen cloth, etc., it will not become something else, but it becomes something else by depending on it, so there is no fault. Then, that "other" of the pot is the subject of the proposition, even without the "other" of the woolen cloth, etc., it will become "other", because when it becomes "other" by its own nature without the woolen cloth, it is for this reason. It cannot be thought like this, because in the absence of "other" such as woolen cloth, etc., the pot becoming "other" does not exist, because it is seen in the world like this, so there is no situation of becoming "other" by its own nature. Second, other schools think that by connecting with the universal called "otherness", it is established as the name of "other". If it is thought like this, the universal of "otherness" does not exist in things that appear as "other", because it is not observed there. It also does not exist in things that appear as "non-other", because there exists the universal of "oneness" which contradicts it. Thus, if there is no reason to establish appearance as "other", that is, the universal of "otherness", then the things that appear as "other" or "non-other" themselves do not exist, because there is nothing to establish it and them. Second, there is no encounter between "thatness" and "otherness", if the encounter exists by its own nature, then one will directly think of things with the same or different essence. If according to the first situation, "thatness" does not encounter itself, because for itself, there is no one who can encounter and what is encountered. If according to the second situation, the other and the other will not encounter either, because if things are different, it is impossible to gather in the same time and place. Third, summarizing the meaning of this time: the act of encountering that is happening, and the encounter after the act is completed, and the encounterer who is dominated by the act also does not exist, because encountering has already been refuted by intellectual analysis. Second, combining with the scriptures: The Bhagavan said: The eye, if possessed, will see everything, whatever forms are seen by the eye, if there is no condition of night, it will not be seen, therefore having union and separation are all discriminations. The eye depends on light, lovely and unlovely, various.
