In conventional truth, the Buddha taught the Dharma, observe conditioned and unconditioned things in that way. In ultimate truth, there is no self and no person, such is the nature of all beings. Virtuous and non-virtuous actions do not perish, the doer experiences the results of their own actions. The fruits of actions do not transfer, nor are they experienced without a cause. All existence is like an illusion, without control, like foam and bubbles. Like illusions and mirages, they are always empty, though spoken of with words, they are all solitary. In caves, mountains, ravines, and valleys, just as cracks appear in rocks due to conditions, likewise, understand all conditioned things in this way, all beings are like illusions and mirages. Thus and so forth it was taught, and the way of teaching should be understood as before. Thirdly, from the commentary on the Root Verses on the Middle Way, "The Light of True View," the examination of "Actions Done by Oneself and Actions Done by Others," which is the explanation of the twelfth chapter. Thirdly, the emptiness of dependent arising, merely as objects, is divided into two: refuting the nature of objects merely as they are, and refuting the proof of that. The first has three parts, the first being the connection of the chapter: Thus, since the arising of outer and inner phenomena from the four extremes has been refuted, it is established that they do not truly arise, yet to those with the dimness of ignorance, they appear as arising and so forth, thus it is established that compounded things are of the nature of deception. Because it is shown that falsehood pervades them, this chapter is composed. Secondly, the text of the chapter has two parts, the first being establishment through reasoning, which also has two parts: establishing the absence of inherent existence from scripture, and refuting the imputation of other meanings to the meaning of scripture. The first is: Those outer and inner compounded things are false and without inherent existence, like illusory beings, that is, all outer and inner phenomena, as previously explained, have been established as without arising through reasoning, yet to those with the dimness of ignorance, they appear as things that arise, thus it is established as the nature of deception, therefore, both the reason and the pervasion are established. The Bhagavan said: Monks, whatever compounded things are of the nature of deception, that is false, and whatever un-deceptive nature is Nirvana, that is the ultimate truth. Thus it is said.
