Therefore, for it, there is no act of seeing. Secondly, just as the eye does not have the nature of seeing, it itself does not see, because it is separate from the act of seeing, like a fingertip. Secondly, refuting that consciousness is the seer has three points: refuting with the previously stated reasoning, refuting with other reasoning, and summarizing the key points. The first point is: If the Sautrāntikas and others think that the eye is not the agent of seeing, but is the act of seeing, and the one who sees form with this act is consciousness or self, then, just as the previous refutation of the eye sense as the agent of seeing form, it should also be known that the faults have been explained in detail for those who think that consciousness or self is the seer of form, because it can be refuted by reciting and translating "The seer's own nature is," etc. The second point is: Furthermore, if there is a seer such as consciousness, does the act of seeing depend on it or not? If it does not abandon the act of seeing, that is, it depends on the act, then the seer itself does not exist, because the dependent itself does not exist; if it exists, dependence is meaningless, so the seer is not established; if it is established, it is unreasonable to depend on seeing. As in the second case, abandoning the act of seeing, that is, not depending on seeing, it cannot be a seer, because there is no cause for establishing a seer. Thus, if the seer is refuted, and if it is thought that there are still objects to be seen and acts of seeing, then according to the previously stated reasoning, because there is no seer, how can the object to be seen, form, and the act of seeing, the eye sense, exist, since they are established by mutual dependence? The third point is: Even so, if it is thought that just as a father and mother, depending on them, it is said that a son is born, similarly, depending on the eye and form, consciousness arises, as stated in the Sutra of Dependent Origination, because there are four: eye consciousness, contact, feeling, and craving, so there are also the act of seeing and the agent, then the four, such as the consciousness of the act of seeing and the agent, are not inherently existent, because according to the previously stated reasoning, the object to be seen, form, and the agent of seeing, the eye sense, do not exist. Therefore, their results, appropriation, existence, birth, and aging.

So, how do the four deaths come to exist? Because the consciousness, which is the cause, and so on, has been prevented. Second, comparing this wisdom with other dharmas: Through seeing, one can hear and smell, one can experience and cognize. It should also be known that there are various explanations of faults for the listener and what is heard, etc., which are self-established. Because the nature of hearing is not the hearing of it. And so on, because everything is the same. Second, combining with the scriptures: The Blessed One said: The eye does not see forms, and consciousness does not know dharmas, where there is no world, this is the supreme truth. Where, by the aggregation of causes, one sees, the teacher is skilled in showing, grasping the reality of that place, one will fall into falsehood. Like this, similarly: Relying on the eye and form, eye consciousness arises, but form does not depend on the eye, form does not transfer to the eye. These selfless, impure dharmas are again regarded as pure and self. Judging wrongly on what does not exist, from this arises eye consciousness. From the cessation and arising of consciousness, one sees the exhaustion and increase of consciousness. The yogi sees that there is no coming and going, it is emptiness, it is a cause. Like this it is said. Similarly, in the Sutra Requested by the Noble Near Round also says: The eye can see if it has all the conditions, the eye sees all forms, if there are no conditions at night, it will not see. Therefore, having and not having are both conceptual thoughts. The eye relies on appearance and sees various forms that are lovely and unlovely, like this it sees relying on having, therefore the eye never sees. Any lovely sound, it also never enters inside. It is not a target that can be gone to, sounds arise relying on conceptual thoughts. Like this it is said. Similarly: The sounds of song, dance, and music are also not graspable. Like a dream, it is the cause of ignorance, delusion, and attachment of the unwise. The unwise who cling to various conceptual thoughts will be destroyed, sentient beings like children become servants of afflictions. All that is said like this, if analyzed with wisdom, the ultimate truth is that the inner and outer sources cannot be found.
