Therefore, one does not proceed on the path that has already passed, because the activity of proceeding has ceased and is no more. Nor does one proceed on the path that has not yet passed, because the activity of proceeding has not yet arisen and is no more. Nor does one proceed on the path that is being proceeded upon, because apart from what has passed and what has not passed, the act of proceeding cannot be known or observed. The second has two parts: stating the assertion, and refuting it. The first part: there is no proceeding on what has passed and what has not passed, but there is proceeding on what is being proceeded upon, because wherever there is movement, there is also proceeding. To establish its pervasion: wherever a traveler has a movement with prior characteristics, there also proceeding is observed. To establish the property of the subject: generally, mere movement is directly observed, and because it has ceased, it is not present in what has passed. Because it has not arisen, it is not present in what has not passed. Because there is no other possibility, it is established that it is only present in what is being proceeded upon, so it is thought. The second has three parts: if the object word has meaning, then the verb word is empty of meaning; if the verb word has meaning, then the object word is empty of meaning; if both have meaning, then it would be too extreme. The first part: when a traveler, like Devadatta, goes to another place, there is only one act of going, so if that one act is related to the object word "being proceeded upon," how could it be reasonable for the expression "being proceeded upon" to have the meaning expressed by the word "going"? It is not reasonable, because that one act of going has become the meaning of the word "being proceeded upon," and there is no second act. If one asks, why must the act of going be related to the object word "being proceeded upon"? Because when there is no act of going, it is not reasonable for the object word "being proceeded upon" to have the meaning expressed. The second part: if one thinks that the word "going" is related to the act of going, then that fault will not occur, then, opponent, if one asserts that the act of going is present in "being proceeded upon," which is merely a name because it is not related to the act of going, then for that position, the object word "being proceeded upon" would be without the meaning of the word "going," because there is only one act of going, and it has become the meaning of the word "being proceeded upon," which is merely a name.
