Therefore, it will be realized that, just like people and other trees, because they are attached to things other than what they have created and planted. Saying "This child was born from me" and "This tree was planted by me" is not admitting that cause and effect are one, but only saying so considering the seed of the child and the tree, and not admitting that the grown-up child and the tree were initially created. Third, refuting production from both: The Samkhya school, which speaks of the lord Ishvara and others, and the naked ascetics believe that the entities of fruits arise from themselves and also from others, so there will be no faults as mentioned before, because they have not admitted that they arise only from themselves and only from others. They say this. To refute them, there are two types of reasoning, the reasoning mentioned before and the reasoning not mentioned. The first is: Production from both is not the essence of reason, because the faults mentioned before will fall upon them. It is said as such. The second is: If each could produce, suffering would also be produced by both. Explaining in this way, if each of oneself and others has the ability to produce, then the gathering of both should also be able to produce, but because of the way mentioned before, neither oneself nor others has the ability to produce, so the gathering of both is also unreasonable, just like oil cannot be extracted from sand. If it is said that eyes and colors, etc., do not have the ability to directly produce eye consciousness individually, but they do when gathered together, this is not certain, it is not so, because "continuum and collection" are false like rosaries, etc. In this way, because the collection itself is not a substance, it is only a favorable condition without ability in itself, and the fact that the collection has ability in name is not denied here. Fourth, refuting production from no cause: The Charvakas believe that present consciousness, as well as the arising of pleasure and pain, are not produced from previous consciousness and good and bad karma, but are produced from the mere gathering of the elements of this world and the collection of favorable conditions. They say this, saying that there is no unseen cause. Observers say, the sun rises in the east, the river flows downwards,

Sharpness, the color and shape of peacocks, and all phenomena, are not arranged by anyone, but arise naturally, saying that there is no visible cause. When refuting this, Buddhapalita said that it is unreasonable for things to arise without a cause, because it would be a fallacy of constantly producing everything from everything. Thus, he spoke of the reasoning of not being occasional fallacy. Acharya Chandrakirti, on top of that, added the fallacy of the effort for the cause for the sake of the fruit becoming meaningless, and the fallacy of not appearing as the object of knowledge, making it three in total. Third, when refuting, there are two ways to eliminate faults: eliminating contradictions with the scriptures, and eliminating the debate that birth is unreasonable in conventional truth due to the negation of the four extremes of birth. First, if dependent origination is thus established as being free from the eight extremes, then it contradicts what is said in the sutras, such as "Conditioned by ignorance are the formations," etc., that there are things to be negated, such as birth, in dependent origination. If you say that, it is not contradictory. Because another sutra says, "Whatever is born from conditions is unborn; it has no nature of birth." It is necessary to seek the intention of the two sutras that say there is no birth and there is birth. At that time, the absence of birth, etc., is established as definitive meaning, and the presence of birth, etc., is established as provisional meaning. Because the Sutra of Inexhaustible Intelligence speaks of eight differences between definitive and provisional meanings, the most important of which is to establish them in terms of the two truths, which is precisely the case being accepted here. Having done so, the direct display of praise, being free from the eight extremes, is definitive meaning, and the eight things to be negated, such as there is cessation and there is birth, exist in name, which is established as provisional meaning. The subject matter of the twenty-seven chapters, the twenty-seven from birth to view, when examined with reason, are not found, which is definitive meaning, and everything exists merely in name, which is established as provisional meaning. Second, you have negated the four extremes of birth in both truths, and the fifth extreme of birth is also impossible, so birth is also unreasonable in conventional truth. If you say that, examining the four extremes in the manner described earlier, birth is also unreasonable in conventional truth. Therefore, although there is no birth established by its own characteristics, in the mind that has not been examined, it depends on causes and conditions.
